Conversations with a Southern Wonder Boy is the soundtrack to THE NEON MAN AND ME. A one-man-show by playwright Slash Coleman which consists of a series of first-person narratives some hilarious, others heartbreaking, which illuminate the playwright''s struggle with a profound prophecy his friend leaves with him before he dies.
Last year, while on tour, the artists best friend died. Mark Jamison, The Neon Man, a neon glass blower from Roanoke, Virginia, died while hanging a sign when his cherry picker was blown into a power line. He was 35. A month after his death, his girlfriend discovered she was pregnant.
"Conversations..." is meant to take the place of a care package to his friends son that he never mailed. Dedicated to Jamison, the album includes stories of their travels, work as jazz musicians, struggle as artists, failures as husbands, and their unique connection to a spiritual life.
Every song has a simple directness that is very appealing. The heartfelt sincerity of Slash''s voice and lyrics as he explores love and loss makes you feel like you''ve been let into his personal world in a surprisingly intimate way.
Many of his songs have a southern flavor and moments of tender sadness are balanced by his unique sense of humor.
"Brightness", in ten words or less, is the best uptempo ballad John Mayer never made.
"Prayer for a Cowboy" is probably one of the most brutally honest yet truly beautiful songs ever written about a son searching for ways to love his father despite the sins of the past.
Other highlights include the lively, danceable "Vows to Move the Moon", the quiet, bittersweet "Simple Man", and the subtle charmer "Inside" that will stick in your head long after you''ve taken the CD out of the player.
"Oh, Virginia" on Slashtipher''s album is pretty much its centerpiece and Coleman''s earnest voice blends perfectly with the epic, string-laden melody of the song, and the
song''s chorus is almost maddeningly catchy. It''s by far the most complex of the songs on this album.
The simple, unvarnished production and Slash''s authentic, unmanufactured voice, combined with the poetic beauty of his lyrics, make Conversations with a Southern Wonder-Boy one of the most welcome surprises of the year. Highly

Slashtipher J. Coleman is a playwright, novelist, painter, musician, surfer, fisherman, hunter, and author of the book "Is My Chakra Pretty?" His short stories have appeared in Nocturnal Lyric, The Daily Planet and The Chronicle. In 2004, he toured theaters with his one-man musical comedy, Love in Boxes.
Slashtipher studied writing and jazz piano in London and in Chicago where he received his Master''s Degree. Through the years he has performed on stage as an MC, stand-up comedian, alternative rock musician, and as a jazz pianist. From 1997-2001, he hosted, "Home Grown Theatre," in his Portland, Oregon apartment, providing a venue for aspiring filmmakers, musicians and performers to develop new work.
As a painter, Slash has exhibited his artwork in his own gallery as well as galleries across the United States. He has created commissions for Stash Tea Inc, State Farm Insurance, and Smith College.
A Virginia native, Slasht currently lives in Richmond, VA where he is an upholsterer working for his family''s furniture business.
