Dr. Madlen Batchvarova is an active conductor, pianist, singer, music educator, clinician and adjudicator. Currently she is the Director of Choral Programs at Hanover College, where she conducts the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. She also teaches conducting, voice, and music history. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Madlen Batchvarova holds a BM and MM in music education in piano performance and solfege from the Academy of Music in Plovdiv, a MM in choral conducting from Georgia State University. Dr. Batchvarova completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Alabama.
Dr. Batchvarova made her debut as a conductor with the Plovdiv Academy Women’s Choir of Bulgaria. She has conducted the ensemble in concerts in the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria, the French Cultural Institute in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, as well as the International Choral Festival in Preveza, Greece.
Madlen is also an accomplished pianist. Some highlights of her career include the First Prize in the Competition for Czech and Slovak Music in Bulgaria, leading to concert engagements at the Bulgarian Cultural Institutes in Prague and Slovakia.
Since her arrival in the United States in 1995, Madlen has performed with the Atlanta Symphony Chorus under the direction of Maestro Robert Shaw. Some highlights of her participation with the ensemble include a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance in 1998, Carnegie Hall appearances, and participation at the Opening Ceremonies of the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.
In addition to her demanding teaching and performing schedule Dr. Batchvarova maintains an active international career. Among her resent accomplishments are conducting appearances, workshops and scholarly presentations at the University of Granada, Spain, Academy for Music in Plovdiv, and the Thracian University in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. Madlen is a regular presenter of interest sessions at conventions of the American Choral Directors Association. She also serves as a performance practice consultant for choirs and other musical organizations around the country.
Dr. Batchvarova is in demand as a guest clinician and conductor. In recent years she has conducted honor and all-state choirs in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Bulgaria and she is active as an adjudicator for regional and state solo and choral competitions.
Dr. Batchvarova is a voting member of the National Academy for Recording Arts and Sciences, the Indiana Choral Directors Association’s executive board as the Ethnic and Multicultural Perspectives Chair, MENC, College Music Society, and the Phi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society. Her biography is included in the almanacs "Who''s Who in America," and “Who’s Who of American Women.”
David Kevin Lamb, Organist, is a graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he studied the organ with Oswald Ragatz, Marilyn Keiser, Larry Smith, and Robert Rayfield. While on the IU campus, he was an associate instructor in Choral Conducting, serving as the Assistant Conductor of the Indiana University Singing Hoosiers, and the Associate Conductor of the IU All-Campus Choruses.
With over twenty years experience as a public school music administrator and choral director, Dr. Lamb is currently an adjunct instructor of Voice at Franklin College in Franklin, IN and an adjunct instructor of music at Indiana University/Purdue University at Columbus. During the summers of 1999 & 2000 he was a Master Teacher of Voice at the West Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts held at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. David has served as a guest conductor for Mass Choir Festivals, sponsored by both the Indiana Music Educators’ Association and American Guild of Organist Chapter Events.
In the area of church music leadership, former positions include churches in Bloomington, Columbus, Jeffersonville, New Albany, and Seymour in Indiana, and in Louisville, KY. Currently the Director of Music and Organist for the First United Methodist Church in Columbus, Indiana, he was honored to be selected to perform as the Conference Organist in 2003 (and again in 2004) for the South Indiana Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, and he has presented guest organ recitals in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin., and Washington, D.C. Concert engagements in Europe have included presentations in France, Germany, and Austria.
Professional memberships include the American Choral Directors’ Association, the Music Educators National Conference, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Organ Historical Society, the Association of Disciple Musicians, the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music & Worship Arts, and the Louisville and Southern Indiana Chapters of the American Guild of Organists, where he holds the Service Playing Certificate and the Colleague Certification.
Dr. Lamb''s professional experiences include work in the realms of concert organist, choral director, church organist, singer, voice teacher, accompanist, pit player, music administrator, public school teacher, college instructor, workshop leader, clinician, and recording artist. As a volunteer on the Jacobs School of Music Alumni Board at Indiana University, David Lamb was the founder and the first president of the Indiana Organists United, an alumni affiliate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Alumni Association.
