Details:
This DJ started his musical journey in the back seat of an American car that he only knew as "Ruby." This back seat, flooded with the sounds of the 70''s radio hits, became the primary colors in the palate that he utilizes to create his vivid beatscapes. From a foundation in the sounds of the Doobie Brothers, The Beatles, Earth, Wind and Fire, moving into the works of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Steely Dan...and then came this thing called Hip-Hop. Groups like Public, Enemy, BDP, EPMD, Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Digital Underground expanded the horizons of a Midwestern teenager.
Inspired by Dr. Johnny Fever and Venus Flytrap, Earl-e followed his passion to the radio (KRUI 89.7) where he and his crew pioneered the local hip-hop scene with their live mix/freestyle show (1992-95). Earl-e refined his skills in dark basements, hole-in-the-wall clubs, frat parties, mix-tapes, and contributed to the operation of Iowa City''s first pirate radio station (ICFR 88.7).
With his love for rocking a party also came a need to create. The crew, consisting of L.A. MC''s, Vegas, Prose, Obskur, and Juggla Vein, formed a beat making factory made out of reel-to-reel machines, "borrowed" computers, blow-your-whole-paycheck drum machines, 4-track tapes and whatever could be utilized on a minimum wage production budget. They performed at local spots and toured the midwest as "Transparent" and later "Unseen Legion."
This low budget mentality remains in Earl-e''s music today. Using borrowed sounds and unsophisticated equipment is the preferred style. His albums are soundtrack of life seen through the eyes of a beat saturated music lover. Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere. From Rakim, to the beat of a turn-signal, or the wind in the trees on a summer night. True style never goes out of style.
