MP3 So Long Goodbyes - Breathe A Little Deeper

If Simon and Garfunkel ever collaborated with Dashboard, had Tom Petty play guitar for them and then wrote some songs about cars, girls, God, cancer, and life then you might have So Long Goodbyes.

So Long Goodbyes?

Basically it is saying ''So Long'' to the perspective that only looks back on the pains of life as opposed to looking forward to the new beginnings that hard experiences can often open up. That sounds kind of cheesy but we have each in our own personal lives been forced to realize the various harsh realities of life. Pain is one of the most unifying human experiences and after having gone through whatever pain life has in store for someone, that individual then has the unique perspective that allows them to relate to the rest of humanity in a way that they never before could do. It is here that most people face a crucial decision in how they are going to handle the hand that life has dealt them. The decision to either face forwards to tomorrow and all the possible hope, opportunities, and chances for a better future or to constantly face backwards at the yesterdays and all their pain, inequalities, and unfairness. Yes, life is not fair. Yes, it outright sucks sometimes. Yes more often than not really nice, hard-working, decent people get stuck with the short end of the stick. But in the face of the fact that life is hard, God is good and that truth carries with it hope. So Long Goodbyes is the difference between constantly saying Goodbye to whatever baggage you have been carrying around as opposed to saying Hello to the idea of starting over. So basically all it really stands for is an attitude that chooses to say So Long to the Goodbyes of life. I hope that made sense, there should really be a comma after So Long for it to make sense.

Who are we?

So Long Goodbyes is Jason (Tank) Broyles (guitar and vocals) and Spencer Green (guitar and vocals). We are a two man duo (most duos are aren''t they?) that will soon be adding Ryan (Staples) Scott who will play bass and eventually Scott Green who will play drums. Hailing from Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas we all feel a need for more thought provoking music that sounds good. Simple enough? I think not.

What are we?

We have had trouble defining our "style" so to speak and to say it is a little bit of everything sounds too cliché but to quote one Brad Waller, "It''s like the hook of Goo Goo Dolls, the storytelling of Counting Crows, and the intensity of Dashboard." So maybe some sort of acoustic-folk-emo-rock that has lyrical representations of anything from Third Eye Blind to (dare I say it?) Jay-Z to John Denver. Regardless of what we think we THINK we sound like, more importantly is what we really sound like so any genre-defining suggestions are welcome and maybe I can then take this limited perspective down and replace it with some "Satisfied Customer" quotes.

Where are we?

Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, OK

How are we?

Fine, thanks.

Why are we?

No simple answer here so I will apologize to everyone and anyone (myself included) for whom this answer doesn''t do us justice. The main thing is that we are Christians that love music but don''t necessarily feel that to be a Christian musician you HAVE to make "Christian music" as it is traditionally defined. We are, however, committed to making good music that is above all original and wrought with messages of hope, life, love, pain, girls, cars, and the pursuit of happiness. Whatever way that comes out, So Long Goodbyes is about making music that is true not specifically to our beliefs (though they are of the utmost importance) but true to life and the realities that come with it. Finding real life is simple. We want to find God in real life.

Enjoy.
