The man named Essential I brings pure positivity to the people, spreading messages of peace, love, strength and hope! From traditional roots reggae sounds, to modern culture chunes, to exceptional hiphop stylings and beyond, Essential I keeps it conscious while singing from his heart and soul. All of this joined onegether with a natural energy and a commanding stage presence make for an upful and ultimately inspiring live experience. His steady voice, fluid flow and stylish delivery create the word sound power that gives music its meaning! Essential I often performs with other Sick Donkey Records artists; Jahson Ites, Huckleberry & DJ Sticky. And occasionally with local foundation reggae band, The Mighty Lions. As a youth growing up in north central Washington State, Essential I, was introduced early to a natural and community minded way of life. Born March 6th, 1982 in Tonasket, WA and given the name Silas, meaning man of the forest, he began his journey into this world. Learning to walk and talk in a small 8''x10'' cabin with his mother and father in the mountains. His father left when Silas was only 1 year of age, sometime thereafter his mother moved them down from the mountain into town. Most of Essential I''s childhood was spent between living in town with his mother and staying with his younger half brother''s father out in the hills and woods living very simply. He was also witness to and involved in many ceremonies of the Native American church. This is where he developed a strong appreciation and respect for our mother Earth and all of Jah''s creation. As he would say in his own words, "I man am born a hippie and grown a rasta." Music has always been a passion, as well as one of his earliest memories. His mother''s eclectic tastes have helped shape his vision and evolved him into a very versatile artist. At roughly the age of 6 or 7 he can recall hearing reggae songs on tapes given to his mother by one of the organizers for the local Roots Mountain Reggae festival in Tonasket. These spiritual chants and smooth grooves have stuck with him. Then at the age of 8 or 9 he began to develope an ear for hiphop as it was gaining popularity in the early 90''s. A long list of Influences from Bob Dylan to Michael Rose to LL Cool J and more have all contributed to his musical direction. At the age of 15 he started to write his own songs and for many years Essential I focused his efforts on making hiphop music. In 2002 Essential I helped form Sick Donkey Records along with his bredren from long time, Bluejay (aka DJ Sticky), Huckleberry & Colin Lanigan. As the Figures of Speech they put out a mixtape of unmixed, roughly edited tracks known as "The Premixtape" and started to get some local recognition. People are still talking about these songs to this day. Spiritually Essential I was brought up attending the christian church and has studied most major religions and faiths but never felt comfortable attaching himself to any group. Eventually he decided, at an adolescent age, to separate himself from the politics of religion. Essential I struggled to find a place in this life, making questionable choices and having little faith in man or God. That is until the voice of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I came to him in purity and clarity and called him to join in the cause of righteousness and fight for truth and justice; to defend the faith. In late 2003, early 2004 Essential I began to commit himself spiritually to the Rastafari Livity. He began to adjust his diet and habits in order to live a more healthy lifestyle. And in late 2005 he decided to locks his hair and made a vow to himself that he would only move forward in love and light from this point on. It wasn''t until 2006, when he linked forward with Jahson Ites to work on his debut "Forward Outta Babylon"(Sick Donkey Records), that Essential I started to play nyabinghi drums and write more reggae influenced hiphop songs, which led to his own unique style of blending hiphop and reggae music to forward his message. Now Essential I will deliver a powerful roots & culture chune inna Jamaican patois, and follow it up with a socially motivated straight hiphop track; no hesitation. With the release of his debut album Essential I has solidified himself as a FreeDem SoulJah in Jah Army! Essential I has worked with, played alongside, and opened up for artists and DJ''s such as: DJ Element(Zion''s Gate Sound), DJs Triple Crown & Ryan I(Blessed Coast Sound), DJs Crow & Yochanan(Real Life Sound), Dynasty Sounds, Jah Dysiple(Holy Night Sound)Promoe(of LoopTroop Rockers), Marlon Asher, Solomon Childs, DJ Pun, Ras Indio, Lutan Fyah, Rocker T, Joseph Israel, Clinton Fearon, The Crucialites, Nigel Nicholas & Patrice Regis(Slaughter Arts Records), Stephen & Damian Marley, Adrian Xavier & The Dub Championz, Judgement Yard, Collie Buddz, Standout Selector, Bill Ortiz(of Santana), Karney & Tim Cash(FarFromEarth Films).
