Details:
RUTH WALLIS was born in Brooklyn, New York. She studied dancing, voice and piano, so it was only natural that she would pursue a career in show business. After high school, the teenager sang in both the Isham Jones and Benny Goodman (briefly) orchestras. Starting in 1948, she recorded risque songs for Deluxe Records. She went on to form the Wallis Original Record Corp., her own company based in Linden, New Jersey. Unlike many other party records, which could barely afford more than a singer and a piano, Ruth Wallis'' songs had full orchestras, usually under the direction of Mac Ceppos or Jimmy Carroll.

Ruth Wallis composed the music and lyrics for all of her songs. Although her music ran the gamut from jazz to ballads and calypsos, she became known for her ''saucy'' double entendres, understanding that suggestiveness is sexier than blatancy. Typecast as a risque singer, radio stations eschewed her. Her songs were banned in Boston during the Eisenhower era, and Australian customs confiscated her records. This only added to her aura. She traveled extensively as an international star doing her own songs and appeared in top supper clubs in Las Vegas and Miami, and was a sensation and sell out on her tours of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and London. Ruth retired from the stage in 1970, a veteran of eleven albums which sold worldwide for over two decades.

Paraphrasing Tony Wilds (from AllMusic): "Ruth Wallis has come up with many fine calypsos previously, but never an entire calypso album. Considering that the calypso is the natural idiom for anyone with the mastery of the double entendre, it is no wonder that Wallis sounds perfectly at home with it. There are many reasons why this is her masterpiece. First, there is unity of theme, exotic percussion, and even such authentic-sounding touches as guitar and chorus. Second, she had a wealth of calypsos to draw from her own material. Such antecedents are obvious. She sounds like the fantastic Eloise Lewis in "Brandy in Me Tea". In "Yankee Like Girl" there is true inspiration. In "Sailor Lad" there is steel pan and, aided by echo, Wallis even transcends from speak-singing to actual singling and "vocalese". "Donkey is Jackass" has some very interesting backround music, and the charms continue with each song. But the standout is "De Gay Young Lad". In authentic calypso there is surprisingly little mention of homosexuality; traditionally it is a taboo subject in macho West Indian culture, the frankness and occasional belligerence of calypso notwithstanding. Fortunately, Ruth Wallis is no West Indian, and in one song she makes up for centuries of neglect."

''BOOBS ! THE MUSICAL'' (subtitled: ''The World According to Ruth Wallis'') oopened at the Triad theatre in New York City on May 19, 2003. It garnered rave reviews from the New York Times, The Daily News, New York Magazine, New York Post and Newsday. By closing date, Sunday, February 8, 2004, ''BOOBS'' had played 13 previews and 272 performances. It has had subsequent runs in New Orleans and Wichita. ''BOOBS'' is a testament to the talent of Ms. Wallis. Not bad for the ''Saucy Redhead'' whose records were banned in Boston!
