Never Made Midnight

This was going to be an album about friends and good times and I was going to have some songs named for some people…

The title comes from a friend of mine who said to me the day after we had been to a party that started earlier the night before. I asked why he did not go to another party later that night, and he said, “ I went home, I never made midnight”.

As I was working on songs for this album several friends passed away and in a moment of weirdness I realized that they would never again make midnight.

In Tombstone: The struggle of being either too lonely, having something to do or worrying about not being killed. How some things never change regardless of the time or place.

Never Made Midnight – The title says it all.

Gary Soderblom – The wonderful musician and friend that got me hooked on electric guitars after I saw and heard him playing Lovin Spoonful songs. Gary passed away on December 5, 2007. When I found out I turned on the recorder and started playing my guitar, and this song is for him.

Cheese Blues – We’re all looking for something, especially when it isn’t there anymore.

Zal Yanovsky – As I was working with some guitar sound effects for a song, I came across what sounded to me like the guitar sound in the Lovin Spoonful’s ‘Didn’t want to have to do it’ played by Zal Yanovsky. Then I realized he had passed away too on December 13, 2002 (he was born December 9 1944). Yeah, the late great guitar player from the Lovin Spoonful had already been gone for 5 years when Gary died and then it hit me, the connection between it all and so I just had to do a song for Zal too.

Nashville – I had gone to Nashville on a work assignment and found out I kinda like the place. A short time later I was creating a PowerPoint on the trip and decided to do a song about Nashville, and well, this is it.

Nelson’s Jam – I figured no one was going to do a song for me, so I id one myself!

We Would Do – This was really going to be the album title and basic theme, and in a way it still is.

Billy Hahl – Bill was like my second brother and he passed away on May 18, 2007, two years and one-day after my mom did. I miss all these people who are gone so that’s why I created songs to let me help them remain forever.
