BIOGRAPHY

Something Johnson was formed in the fall of 1999 as a singer-songwriter duo and quickly developed into a four member group. Capitalizing on the presence of multiple songwriters, who played multiple instruments, they developed a wide open approach to writing, performing and producing their music. A regular at their shows in Austin, Texas defines their musical style as Americana-pop. Flute trills, mandolin licks, a wailing harmonica and well placed harmonies meander through a straight forward, (and usually optimistic) set. S.J.''s debut EP, Rough Around the Edges, received positive reviews both at home and in the U.K. The bands first full length studio recording, Raison, was released in November of 2004.

Review:

Something Johnson''s Raison

Something Johnson is obviously a band that likes to have fun while playing and writing music; Raison demonstrates that the band knows what it is doing when it is time to produce. Although Raison is the band''s first full-length album, the thirteen songs on this CD release by Austin-based Something Johnson are obviously the product of seasoned songwriters and musicians.
Raison is aurally surprising and musically innovative, while consistent with the good-time, beer drinking sound which Something Johnson has become known for around Austin''s live music scene. Songs with titles such as "Crazy Wild Free" and "Naked Woman" begin feeling like simple, alt-country-rock party songs but develop into more musically complex numbers with unexpected melody changes, displaying a mature but fun-loving compositional style. Surprising layers of flute, mandolin, and harmonica augment the country-rock sound of this multi-talented four-piece band.
Three of the four members of Something Johnson are credited with writing the songs on Raison, and with each providing lead vocals on their respective numbers, this record provides a satisfying mix of vocal styles and lyrical themes. Raison is filled with catchy lyrics and melodies; simple but evocative lines have been stuck in my head for days, such as "I guess I''m just not on top of things" (from Trent Hunt''s "& Then Again") and "Life keeps going on" (from "My Happy Song," by guitarist Mike Carpenter). Bassist Diane Hunt''s two contributions, "Critical Eye" and "Love Thy Neighbor," add a beautiful feminine point of view to this fun-loving but thoughtful album. The optimism and variety of this record make Raison an album that will be appealing to fans of Austin-style Americana rock music.
