It''s been said that the best rule of storytelling is embellishment. I don''t know who said it, but in most cases it''s true. However, the story of Spell Toronto will be filled with pure facts, I promise.
The band started like many others in the sense that they came from a slew of different bands that are not really worth mentioning. Out of those bands comes one to speak of. Spell Toronto is comprised of four members whose influences range from hair metal to funk, hip-hop, and punk. When the band formed they took a turn from these influences and remembered the great indie-rock bands from their hometown of San Diego. In the early nineties, most people were setting their sites on the flannel wearers of the Northwest. These kids however, were paying a lot of attention to the college rock and underground scene that they were too young to participate in.
This brings us to the members. Danny King is the band''s drumming wizard and youngest member. Naturally, he is the most picked on. His energy on and off the stage is only surpassed by his ability to remove his shirt by the second song in any set, and his ability to keep time by punching himself in the head while playing. Jayce Molina mostly plays guitar, but he is the band''s resident bum. He has spent a majority of the last two years trying to find couches or practice spaces to sleep on or in. This fuels his creativity as one of the songwriting forces in Spell Toronto. Jason De La Torre is the vocalist / guitarist for the group. He is also quite the hypochondriac. He can be seen covering his beer if anyone sneezes or coughs within a ten-foot radius of his personal bubble, or taking medication to control acid reflux disposition. The rest of the band is certain he is making it up. Ismael "Chacho" Velazquez Jr. plays bass and in his spare time he is a mechanical engineer. Needless to say, he has the band''s best job, yet the government prefers him not to talk about it.
All these personalities strung together fill many nights with laughs, empty beer bottles, and some pretty great music. Spell Toronto has a great dynamic on and off the stage. The raw passion that they express while playing is always carried over off stage in whatever they are doing...mostly drinking, but at least there''s passion.
