Formed in 2003, Squad 51 is an eclectic ensemble of some of the finest musician/songwriters Houston has produced in some time. The brainchild of Don Mackenzie (lead guitarist), the four-piece has a sound often compared to Collective Soul, Stone Temple Pilots, Train, and occasionally King''s X.

The other members of Squad 51 are Christopher David (vocals and guitar), Greg Bowen (drums), and Mark Havens (bass). Their debut CD, Modal Citizens, was recorded in Houston, TX at The Grape II studios and Eighth Note Studios and mixed and mastered at Sony Music Studios in NYC by renowned Engineer Joe Just, a.k.a. "5". Chris and Don are the primary songwriters. The first single and music video to be released will be for the track "In Memory Of...", a tribute to Don''s Father who died in 1997. The band has played virtually all of Houston''s rock clubs including The Engine Room, Fitzgeralds, The Sidecar, and The Rhythm Room. The band''s live performance raises the bar in terms of energy and musicianship and the 2004 season should boost Squad 51''s visibility with shows scheduled at the Bayou City Live Festival, a showcase in Chicago with the Bite Size Chunks for Capitol Records. The band has put a lot of their time and resources into promotions for shows and the new album. Ads on MTV, VH1, and local radio have boosted show attendance and the online record sales to a level few Houston bands have experienced. "That''s because of our backgrounds", says Don, who happens to own Mackenzie Media Advertising Agency, which produces national TV commercials. "We leverage our experience in media production to help the band get more exposure, and it''s really starting to pay off."
