ROCK: Acoustic, ROCK: Folk Rock

Details:
Five years after the breakup of the Beatles, Steve McClain received his first record by the Fab Four. That recording sparked an obsession with music that led him to the guitar and continues to influence his songwriting today, ranging from Jim Croce-type folk tunes to modern singer/songwriter rock songs in the style of Grant-Lee Philips, Jay Farrar, John Mayer and Ryan Adams.

In the fall of 2000, Steve began work on his first independently released solo CD, “Born In Captivity”. Released in January 2001, the disc features nine tracks of original compositions fueled by McClain’s acoustic guitar and sincere voice. Steve also plays bass, drums, banjo and harmonica on the disc, which features Jennifer Klich on the viola. In February 2001, 91.3 WAPS-FM in Akron, Ohio began spinning tracks from “Born In Captivity” in regular rotation. Music from “Born In Captivity” is also heard on WDUB Internet radio in Cleveland, Ohio. Also in 2001, Steve was featured on a compilation CD showcasing the best of Akron/Cleveland artists, entitled Bandwidth 2.0, sponsored by 91.3-FM The Summit in Akron while continuing to perform regularly with violist Matt Schildt.

Steve’s second full-length solo effort, “lemonadestand”, was recorded at Miles Robert Audio in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and released in November 2002, featuring Matt Schildt on viola and keys, Todd Hemberger on drums and Jeff McCrystal on bass. This line-up performed in the Cleveland/Akron area in support of “lemonadestand’ at prominent venues such as the Hard Rock CafĂ©, and the 2003 Cleveland Music Festival. The group was also first round winners in the All Campus Programming Board’s Battle of the Bands competition at Kent State University after receiving airplay on WKSR.

After moving to the Nashville, Tennessee area in 2004, Steve released the much-anticipated CD, “One Shoe On The Highway” in early 2005. Produced and engineered by Robert Felmly, Jr. of SC Records, the album is 12 tracks of original music composed within a year’s time frame, featuring long time partner Matt Schildt on viola, violin and piano and Aaron Durieux on conga and djembe. “I think that since these songs were all written during a relatively short amount of time, it lends a certain continuity to the whole record,” McClain says. With introspective lyrics and modern singer/songwriter instrumentation, the album is a mix of sparsely orchestrated neo-folk tunes and radio friendly acoustic rock songs. “One Shoe On The Highway” also features the first collaborations of McClain and Schildt on the intimate guitar/vocal/piano track “Around” and the instrumental “Prelude to Ubiquity.” Akron radio 91.3 The Summit began spinning the single “Passing Trains” in December 2004. Steve’s music is also heard on the specialty shows Just Plain Folk and Anything Goes, which in the past have featured such artists as Janis Ian, Fairport Convention and the English folk/rock group Equation.

Steve has a series of shows planned in 2005 between Nashville and Cleveland. “Being in Music City is cool, but there is no place like Northeast Ohio, the rock and roll capital!” “Born In Captivity”, “lemonadestand”, and “One Shoe On The Highway” are available online at https://www.tradebit.com, https://www.tradebit.com, select Borders Books and Music stores in northeast Ohio and at all shows.
