RARITIES OF THE 18TH CENTURY
Sarn Oliver, violinist, and musicians of the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of David Feldman.
In music, contrary to the notion of stability implied in the "pre-classical" appellation, the first half of the 18th century was a dynamic period of transformation and innovation. Testimony as it is of the last highlights of the baroque, it permitted overall the development of two important formats of the modern orchestral music: the symphony and the concerto.
The string instruments acquired their present form and dimensions between 1690 and 1710. The lightening and extension of the bow, due to Tartini first and then to Tourte, open new accentuation and phrasing possibilities, as well as more dynamic nuances. The ground bass has disappeared, to the advantage of various rythms, dotted and syncopated, with a dramatic use of nuances oppositions.
This program brings four moments of this innovative time together, which already prefigure, by their force, their exuberance and expressivity without complex, the great symphonic and concertante works by Haydn and Mozart.
