Studd-K Bio
There''s a new breed entering the world of hip-hop. The demand for versatile emcees has grown while the supply has been very discouraging until now. Several artists display a lack luster lyrical performance over incredible tracks or vice versa. Brickabockaz Entertainment Enterprises recording artist Studd-K brings a well-balanced approach told from a perspective unexplored. He hails from rural Kentucky, however affiliated with a Newark, NJ based record label hence a style hat has absorbed all of his surroundings.
On November 12, 1976, Studd-K was born Eric Hicks in Harlan, Kentucky. Deprived from basic urban necessities such as radio stations and record stores he still managed to become a part of the culture. Studd expressed the severity of his situation to our interviewer. "I can remember having my cousins in the city mail me VHS recordings of Yo'' MTV Raps as well as hot songs on the radio."
Studd established himself hugely in Hollypoint projects with a Group dubbed "Fresh I (incorporated)." The group performed at school assembly programs but mainly experience came from battling cross town crews as well as crews from neighboring cities. Eventually Fresh I dwindled to one-member Studd-K comments, "The others just kind of grew up, because a rap star from Harlan County was unlikely. I was the only one out of touch with what was then reality"
In 1996 Studd attended St. Catharine College on a basketball scholarship where he caught the ear of teammate Akbar Cook, a hip-hop connoisseur from Newark, N.J. Cook was moved by his teammate''s hunger on the court as well as the pen. Studd comments, "Ak taught me a lot as far as what people expected from me lyrically. I was more focused on how my flow sounded." The two eventually parted ways but not before Cook could invite his country protégé to New Jersey to get in the studio. The two along with producer extraordinaire Rasul Artist recorded 10 songs. Cook was so impressed with the finished product that he decided to experiment with starting a record company. The Brick City native decided to name his record label Brickabockaz Entertainment. The name comes from his love for the Bricks and his hate for the N.Y. Knickerbockers.
Brickabockaz Entertainment completed it first project in 2001. Studd-K released a 10-track mixtape entitled "The Spark". The mixtape received rave reviews in New Jersey as well as Kentucky, but this was only the beginning. The Spark was only the foundation. The next move was to try more songs equipped with original production recorded with top-level equipment. Studd came back to N.J. to record at Perfect Pair Studios. Perfect Pair has been blessed by the likes of hip-hop/R&B queen Lauryn Hill.
Studd recorded three songs that once again received great reviews. This was convincing enough to move forward with the album process. Mindful of the long process of creating a hit album, Ak knew the streets would be eager for their next Studd K dosage. So Ak and Studd began working on dual projects producing two mixtapes, while Rasul gathered beats for the album, "Kentucky Burnin." The album is set to drop March 9, 2004.
