Indie Rock with Who-like musical excess: A tasty platter of meaty guitar riffs and dressed-up lyrics in a well-seasoned rhythm section, finished with a dallop of resentment.

ROCK: 90''s Rock, ROCK: Emo

Details:
The Staggering Statistics are a rock band from Cincinnati, OH. All three members are music "lifers". John Curley was a founding member of the Afghan Whigs and owns Cincinnati''s Ultrasuede recording studio. Austin Brown is a prolific songwriter who played in dozens of bands from Houston to Seattle before arriving in Cincinnati and joining dozens more, many at the same time. Joe Klug has been playing all kinds of instruments since he was a kid. He''s played in bands on the bar scene and composes music, as well. He joined The Staggering Statistics in the fall of 2003.

The Staggering Statistics began as a series of improvisational jams at Ultrasuede involving Curley, Brown and various drummers. Eventually the jam sessions began to produce songs and the band played its first show on July 3, 2003. Since then, the band has continued to play Cincinnati shows every month or so. In addition, The Staggering Statistics have also appeared on bills with The Twilight Singers, The Violent Femmes and The Von Bondies.

The self-titled debut release from The Staggering Statistics is due sometime in late summer 2004. Because Curley, Brown and Klug were avid recording geeks before they began playing together, The Staggering Statistics had already amassed several hundred gigabytes of studio, rehearsal, demo and live recordings before bringing in Cincinnati ex-pat C. Laszlo Koltay to record what was to become The Staggering Statistics'' debut LP. Koltay already had a long history with The Staggering Statistics, having worked at Ultrasuede and played in several bands with Austin Brown.

Musically, the sound is full and exciting; heavy with melodic bass lines and guitar parts that are at once soothing and confrontational. Austin''s lyrics deal with familliar themes of love and betrayal but also incorporate characters from his daily life. It has been said that Austin doesn''t get mad at you, he just writes a song about you. Joe''s solid beats and tight harmonies serve as the "Jesus nut" that keeps the rotor from breaking loose and decapitating everybody.

At this time, The Staggering Statistics continue to play shows in and around Cincinnati, working on a follow-up LP and saving money to buy more hard drives. Future goals for the band beyond writing and playing shows are uncertain. "Each step for us has been tenative", says Curley, "we were all kind of burned out on playing shows and being in bands when we got together. Originally we didn''t even want to learn any songs but Austin writes so many cool parts that we wanted to keep playing them. Then we were like, ''Hey Austin, why don''t you write some lyrics...'' At that point, you kind of need to do gigs if you want to stay motivated to remember how the songs are supposed to go. It would be cool to have someone put our records out but we''re all pretty happy with our lives the way they are right now, so if that happens, great. If not, that''s OK, too."
