Secrets Between Sailors are a high energy rock''n''roll band whose stage antics and furious drumming have garnered them comparison to greats such as the Who, Built To Spill, and the Clash. They''ve played over 100 shows and have emerged as one of the most exciting young bands in the Midwest.
Formed by songwriter Kyle David Burkett and drummer Zack DePew in the winter of 2005, SBS began playing shows in basements and at house parties under several monikers-- including Bourbon & St. Peter and The Dawn Raid. Andrew Maxson, a screen-printer attending art school at Indiana University, joined the band permanently on bass guitar. Pete Voakes, of NYC''s Magic Tricks, and Ryan Helling, of Indiana’s The Country Death, also spent time playing with the Sailors before moving on to different musical and geographical landscapes.
SBS soon established themselves in the Midwestern bar/club scene and added guitarist Andreas Butler to the line-up. The earned some cash, regional attention, and recording time, and self-produced their debut record, which was released by the homegrown Suburban Sounds record label. The album was recorded at Russian Recording with Mike Bridavsky and mastered by Bob Weston (of Shellac) at Chicago Mastering. The group then embarked up their first national tour, which included stops in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Buffalo and New York City.
Secrets Between Sailors are a dying breed, drawing influence equally from hall of famers like Neil Young and garage punks such as the Replacements, Guided By Voices and Husker Du; They’re fighting to keep rock’n’roll honest in the age of Creed and Clear Channel.
