Details:
Nearly blind since the age of nine, Decurrian''s heightened awareness of sound helped him create a vibrant and colorful musical style, which encapsulates his life story, humble demeanor and ambitious drive. Much like two of his inspirations, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, Decurrian has a voracious appetite for many different kinds of music, and refuses to confine himself to any one sound or style. His musical range helps his broad-base appeal, in addition to his unique perspective on life. Decurrian''s (D.C.) story is as fascinating as his music. Amin (a-me-n) Tony Hester, Decurrian''s given name, was born in Hudsell Hospital in Detroit, Michigan on November 30, 1979. He was born with a visual impairment. At the age of nine, he went completely blind in his left eye and struggled with the right. Growing up, one of eight children on Petososkey Street in west Detroit, his family could barely earn enough money, which forced Decurrian to grow up in poverty. In light of his childhood struggles, Decurrian was raised in a musical environment, absorbing the breadth of his parents'' enormous record collection and knowledge of music. At the age of ten, his parents separated, and it was soon after he moved to Tacoma, Washington. Spending the school years in Tacoma and summers in Detroit allowed Decurrian to experience the extreme differences in cultures between the Midwest and Northwest; this brought him a whole new perspective on life. Although Decurrian started writing at the age of nine; he actively began his career as a lyricist at the age of fifteen. He was featured in several local artist songs including "G-Files," "Gotta Have Something," "What Makes You Wanna Get Yours" and "Keep It Poppin''" with Buzzar (Buzz-R) a Tacoma-based group. As a teen he was faced with many personal and societal difficulties, which turned him to hustling to support him self and running the streets with a local gang. His integrity and fearless independence earned him street credibility, regardless of his personal struggles. After graduating from high school in Tacoma at the age of seventeen, his mother sent him to live on his own off Rainier Ave. in Seattle. He attended Washington State Services for the Blind to continue preparing himself, in the event he loses his sight completely. Following this two-year program he attended Tacoma Community College (T.C.C.), after the first quarter Decurrian returned to Detroit for a brief visit. Since he had only applied two weeks earlier, he was surprised to hear from his mother in Tacoma, that he had received a letter of acceptance to Washington State University (W.S.U.). With absolutely nothing, he got on the train heading to W.S.U.; it was while he was at W.S.U., during his first semester, his family moved back to Detroit, leaving him in the Northwest. He has now graduated with a B.A. in Communicational Studies with a minor in Music. During his junior year, Decurrian went completely blind for five months and still managed to stay in school and pursue his music. With the mountain of challenges he''s been climbing his entire life, he has mastered the true meaning of being humble and his lyrics express it. Nearly everything he recorded bore the stamp of his inspirational outlook. Even when he addressed serious cultural, social and spiritual issues or rapped about heartbreak and romantic uncertainty, an underlying sense of optimism and hope always seemed to emerge. Early on Decurrian recognized his natural poetic talent. Over the past decade, as he continued to write raps about his experiences, his creativity expanded, which has made him a respected and talented lyricist. Decurrian has been asked to sign with several local record companies and labels but never did. He is waiting for the right opportunity with a company that can utilize his stories and experiences to the fullest. Although he has yet to sign a contract, he has been affiliated with Tyrant Productions, RPM Productions and Revolutions Records for the past seven years. He has written, co-written, collaborated, featured and performed numerous tracks with these entities. His performances include opening for platinum artists such as Blake Lewis, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Mac Mall, Yukmouth and Maktub, as well as headlining several of his own shows throughout the Northwest. Today, Decurrian continues to perform consistently but his main focus has been working on his highly anticipated debut album, "Visions of a Blind Man". The album, was released 2007.
