Michigan based quartet Groove Merchant brings a unique sound to the table combining old school funk and progressive jazz and pop. Groove Merchant was started in early 2005 between organist Paul Lesinski, drummer Fred Knapp, and former guitarist Mark Turner. In 2006, Mark had to leave the band and in came guitarist Michael Drost just back in West Michigan after almost a decade as a first call player on the Chicago music scene. In 2006 we also added saxophonist John Gist to the band who brings years of experience playing in the areas best Blues, R&B, and Jazz groups. Organist Paul Lesinski brings a mastery of the jazz language as well as the rock and pop tradition. Drummer Fred Knapp is one the top jazz drummers in West Michigan and brings years of experience to the band. One thing that is special about this band is that each member has contributed multiple songs to our repertoire which gives us a very diverse sound combining many different influences like jazz, rock, blues, and r&b.
