Greg Summerlin recorded his self titled debut CD last year after playing lead guitar for several years with The Quinsonics. The CD was produced by three time Grammy winning engineer/producer Rob Burrell and recorded in Nashville after Rob heard some of the material Greg had been writing over the past couple of years. After agreeing to work together they began the process of determining which songs out of the 25 or 30 Greg had given to Rob would be the ones to make it on the CD. "We were trying to find a group of songs which would present a cohesive musical picture, but still had some diversity to it" says Greg. As a result the eleven songs on the CD exhibit a wide range of musical and lyrical influences ranging from Radiohead to New Order to the Replacements, while maintaining a new and original sound.
In his previous life, Greg was lead guitarist for the local cult favorites The Quinsonics. When Greg was with The Quinsonics they developed a loyal following as they played all over the South including South by Southwest in Austin, Extravaganza in Nashville, the Jubilee Festival in Montgomery and City Stages and 107X-Fest at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre in Birmingham and had major label interest before disbanding.
Greg''s debut effort has received great reviews nationwide and he has already developed a strong local following as evidenced by his recent shows at Workplay Theatre in Birmingham. The CD has become a college radio favorite receiving airplay on over 180 college and alternative stations across the US and Canada. It has jumped into the top 10 and top 30 at many of these stations including CORE stations like KTCU in Fort Worth where it spent weeks in the top 20. The first single,"My Own Pen", received airplay on many new music shows at alternative rock stations across the country including areas such as Denver, Chicago and New York, and the next single,"Voices", charted at many commercial stations across the country in markets as large as Salt Lake City.
The next Greg Summerlin CD is close to completion and is expected to be released in Spring 2005 with touring to begin soon thereafter.
