Details:
Labyrinth came about as the result of a Jazz Fellowship from the PA Council of the Arts. I used the recording as an opportunity to explore techniques and harmonic concepts I had been developing over the years. This was also an opportunity to record with musicians with whom I had never previously worked in addition to some with whom I knew for a number of years. Bob Meashey, trumpet – I’ve know and worked with Bob in various ensembles over the years; his solos are always lyrical and sensitive. Paul Gehman, bass & Dan Monaghan, drums – I’ve know these two exceptionally creative and solid players for over five years through various projects I would start - but not always finish! I wanted to give something back to them through this recording. Tony Miceli, vibes – I’ve known Tony off and on for many years but this was our first recording together – what a treat! Tony is an amazingly talented musician; an extremely hard worker meticulous in his effort to master the music before him. Tony Marino, bass & Erik Johnson, drums – these remarkable and extraordinary improvisers came to be part of this recording via Tony Miceli and I will be forever grateful – they were a pleasure to work with and always inspiring. Jim McFalls, trombone – what a talent! Ron Thomas (Lyonswaltz) told me about him and I was blown-away with his phenomenal level of playing. I’ve known Ron through gigs we’ve done and from concerts he has given – an exceptionally talented improviser and composer. Vince Trombetta was my professor of saxophone at what is now the University of the Arts in Philly and is presently quite successful in Los Angeles. I was rummaging through some old manuscript books and came across his brilliant tune Voodoo, which he had handwritten for me to study. I recalled how much I enjoyed the changes in the tune and decided to add it to the mix. The sextet of flute, trumpet and trombone works quite well so I decided to arrange both Ron and Vince’s tunes in that setting. Finally, the album was recorded locally in Springhouse, PA at Morningstar Studios by the exceptionally gifted and patient Dave Schonauer. The artwork is by my lovely wife, Marlene. Enjoy.
EXCERPT FROM A RECENT REVIEW:
With Labyrinth, jazz flutist and composer/arranger Marc Adler has created a rich and compelling compact disc recording of contemporary jazz chamber music…Adler’s improvisations display a fleet technique, with his tone alternating between a pleasant and earthy/breath-like quality and a pure/clear sound…Each of the soloists in the ensemble create mature improvisations that demonstrate an understanding of contemporary jazz styles in swing and even eighth-note genres. Labyrinth is a contemporary jazz recording of high caliber that serves notice to the flute and jazz communities that Marc Adler is a musician to be recognized.
- Bob Lark, Jazz Studies Chair & Director of the Jazz Ensemble, DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois – excerpt of his review of Labyrinth in the October 2008 issue of Flute Talk magazine.
