Flute Improvisations – Autumn Smiles was originally released in 1995 simply as Flute Improvisations and was well received at the time [see review excerpts below]. It was financed in part by a Jazz Fellowship from the PA Council on the Arts and the compositions reflect a wide range of emotions and life experiences. Listening to the opening cut, Autumn Smiles while traveling on a beautiful country road recently in October it was not hard to understand how music and title came to be associated – the subtly shifting chords and flowing melodic lines were in harmony with the colors and movements of the leaves and trees as I drove along. Autumn is also an important month for me as well - my wife and I were born, met [many years later, of course!] and married in that brief but special season.
And so it goes with each original selection on the CD – they were all connected to various aspects of my life at the time they were written and ultimately recorded [Simone is dedicated to my daughter who came into our lives only five years earlier]. I was very fortunate to have assembled the excellent players for the recording sessions as each had a very busy schedule at the time - assembling the same players now would be next to impossible - they’ve all gone on to spectacular careers and I encourage you to look each up on the internet.
