About the Band
There''s a new sound in downtown Honolulu. It''s grittier, more streetwise, yet still posesses the haunting quality of our contemporary Hawaiian songwriters. Melodies and moving harmonies set against driving arrangements and powerful rhythms. Musical bridges that connect the angst and trepidations of an urban Hawaii to the deeper soul searching, soul surfing sentiments unique to our island heritage.
There''s a new sound on the streets of Honolulu. SUGahDADDY, e''hawaiianrockband, surprises listeners with the dynamic range of its performers, all veterans of stage and concert tours. These local musicians have an average of ten years production experience each, from Vegas showrooms to Carnegie Hall. All members of the production reside in the islands and together have focused their talents to archiving musically the experiences of everyday life at the edge of the Pacific Polynesian region. A blend of Adult Contemporary, Surf Rock and Hawaiian music give SUGahDADDY a true diversity.
The name itself is a tip of the hat to common ancestral vocation as family members of the band mates, as recently as one generation ago, worked for the sugar plantations. And in a salute to the teachings of their kupuna and Hawaiian ancestry, SUGahDADDY finds the HA, the breath of life, like the kaona, hidden in all things.
The listener is treated to a host of strong original material. Principle driving force of the group is Kailua born musical director Darrell Aquino, on bass and vocals. Sean Thibadeaux handles the intricacies of SUGahDADDY''s deft compositions on lead guitar. Mike Cueva adds a smooth edge with his saxophone prowess and the backbone and drive are provided by Captain John (Charleston) on drums. Rounding out this talented collection of singer/songwriters is the spiritual leader of the group, Rev. Mat Kalani Souza on guitar and vocals, whose wit and biting social commentary make him the most irreverent of the bunch.
Oh yes, there is a new sweet sound in Honolulu....SUGahDADDY.
