The Sidewards Story

When asked to describe Swampadelica, the story of three blind men describing an elephant comes to mind.
One felt the legs and described it as tall and stout like an oak tree, one felt the trunk and described it as snake like, and the last felt the body, seeming much like a large boulder. Any given track on Swampadelica''s new album, Sidewards, may give the listener a similar impression. What does remain consistent, however, is the creative team of Calcagne, Lafond and Herkert.

Damian Calcagne (formerly with From Good Homes), with his modified/looping Hammond organ, has already established himself as an accomplished songwriter and performer with the success of Swampadelica''s first self titled album. The addition of Nadine Lafond and Brian Herkert has taken Swampadelica in broader directions. Brooklyn born and later growing up in East Orange, NJ, in the Fugees back-yard, Nadine Lafond''s Haitian-American roots bestow a vocal style uniquely her own. Her native Haitian Creole wends its way in and out the lyrics seamlessly. Brian''s love for the groove shines through with a deep penchant for funk and hip-hop.

Sidewards is Swampadelica 3.0.

Swamp''s sound has become a blend of modern and vintage, earth and urban.
Sonically experimental, with real song writing still at its core,
Swampadelica is Americana, Haitian, Hip Hop, Funk, Country, Pop and Soul.

Sidewards is co-produced, recorded and mixed by sonic guru John Siket. Siket has created his fair share of master pieces for bands such as Phish, MMW, Dave Matthews Band, Stanley Turrentine, Sonic Youth, Freedy Johnston and Guster to name just a few.

Sidewards was a long term experiment that began at Trey Anastasio''s Vermont based studio, The Barn. Siket opened the doors of the Phish inner chambers to Swampadelica for album #2. He felt that having everyone together in one large space would give the ablum a foundation of "liveness". Thirteen songs were recorded over fourteen (not easily describable) days.

The second layer to Sidewards was added at the Jersey based Darress Theatre. Siket, Calcagne and Herkert turned the 1919 vaudeville theatre into a recording studio and rewired the theatre for sonic strangeness. After a month of sessioning that would go until 10am each morning, the The Barn''s earthy basic tracks began to mutate. The combination of these polar vibes is the foundation of Sidewards.

The album was mixed by John Siket at his lower east side, Manhattan based studio, Theatre 99 (another theatre built in the early 1900''s) and mastered by Fred Kevorkian.

Oak tree? Snake like? A large boulder?
