Details:
Think of wood smoke in a midnight kitchen, the music of Miles, whirling topiaries of snow, mankind’s hapless rise from the mud and there you have but a few of the themes of Archeology of Night, Sarah Heath’s intimate musical settings of selected poems by noted New England writer Franz Douskey, whose work has appeared in numerous anthologies and publications such as Rolling Stone, The Nation, and The New Yorker.

Sarah’s velvety spoken word and jazz flavored songs will easily carry listeners over Douskey’s unpredictable and often unsettling terrain of the human landscape, accompanied by piano, bass and percussion. The idea is reminiscent of Jack Kerouac’s explorations of jazz and beat poetry in the 50’s, but with an entirely different aesthetic. Ms. Heath is an expressive vocalist and composer who has thoughtfully combined music and spoken word here in ways that are both artistic and compelling. The result is a collection that is whimsical, irreverent, heartfelt, experimental, and utterly fresh.

Sarah Heath has previously performed and recorded extensively with The Heath Sisters, and has appeared in books and CD’s by Sandra Boynton, notably “Philadelphia Chickens,” nominated for a Grammy in 2003.

Her solo projects include the 2009 instrumental Solstice recording, “Wintersong,” for piano, guitar, celesta, and alto glockenspiel.

She is currently working on “The Song Garden for Piano,” an illustrated Kodaly influenced teaching series for young beginners. She teaches middle school music and private piano students by day and plays in a steel drum band on Monday nights. In the summer she heads for the woods, due North.
