"Tappin'' Out A Rhythm. Pickin'' Out A Tune" represents a new direction and focus for Travenia records. On this CD (which we hope will be the first of a series) we are presenting some of the finest talent in acoustic music the American Midwest has to offer. Though we have started with a local focus (most of the artists on this volume are from Madison, WI or Chicago, IL) we plan to expand it in future productions. Meanwhile, we offer, here, a few of the best and most unique folk performers to be found anywhere!

The Songs

Eleven Below - Sof Sof - Sof Sof is Miriam Brosseau and Alan Sufrin; two young songwriters who travel a different path from most duos. More often than not duos tend to mirror one another''s chords while singing half-step harmony (if any at all). With Sof Sof we not only hear each adding a well played and individualistic guitar line, but the vocal lines are written for counterpoint. This song is from their five song, self titled, self released CD.

Tera''s Tune - Bowen Marvik - Artists who are exclusively instrumentalists are rare. Good ones more so. As for good instrumentalists who are also good composers ... well... Can you say "hen''s teeth"?
"Tera''s Tune" will be on his, as yet untitled, second CD on Travenia Records. His first CD, Concert Acoustic Guitar, is still available from https://www.tradebit.com.

Because We Can - Andina and Rich - Sandy Andina and Stephen Lee Rich have been sitting in on one another''s sets for twenty years. They have finally decided to make a formal act out of it. This is one of Sandy''s sharp, satirical songs. After it made Dr. Demento''s Funny Five what else could Sandy and Stephen Lee do but make it the title track for their upcoming CD for Travenia?

Black Is The Colour - Jeremy O''Sullivan - Of all of the old, traditional ballads one has heard, over the years, none have been more frequently or brutally trashed than this one. Jeremy O''Sullivan is that hard to find sort of singer who is able to take a song like this, which you have heard done well and badly a million times and infuse it with youth and vigor. Though he now lives in Madison, WI, Jeremy comes to us from Cork City in Ireland where he learned the sean-nos (Irish traditional) style of singing.

Moj dilbere (My Sweetheart) - Mazurka Wojciechowska - Maz collects and performs the songs of Eastern Europe. This tune is from a CD she did with the Slavic Projection Folk Ensemble.
The words to this plaintive song are:
My sweetheart, where did you go that you did not visit me this evening? Were you ill or did you fall in love with another? I''d rather find out that you were sick than courting someone else.

I''ve Had That Happen To Me - Stephen Lee Rich - Stephen Lee checks in with a tale about the ultimate hangover. It''s from his solo CD, Facing Monday, on Pachanga Records which is available here at https://www.tradebit.com.

Old Wisconsin River - The Dustbunnies - The Dustbunnies are Bill Fallon and Ben Doran. Bill, Ben, and Ben''s grandfather, Ben Queen, wrote this nostalgic piece.

Fire On The Prairie - Aaron Nathans - Aaron Nathans is a working journalist by day and a fine performer and songwriter by night (don''t ask about the full moon).
As of this writing he has a solo CD in the works. This is a talent to watch. He''ll be with us for a long time.

Spirit Of Life - Ingrid Frances Stark - Ingrid is a Wisconsin based singer, songwriter, poet, artist and photographer. This tune is from her solo CD released by Celtic Carp Music.

Calling The Shamrock - Jeremy O''Sullivan - In addition to being an incredible singer Jeremy is also a budding songwriter. This is his whistful comment about homesickness.

You Called? - Ingrid Frances Stark - A bit of inspired silliness from Ingrid. It''s the outbound message on her answering machine.

The Luck Of Liliy J - Bowen Marvik - Bowen wrote this one for his wife, Lily. It will also be on his next CD.

Shira - Sandy Andina - When someone is as consitantly funny as Sandy it''s easy to forget that she is also able to craft some very moving serious songs. This one is a character sketch told from the point of view of an Isreali border guard.

Muck - Andina and Rich - Just for fun.
