Tim Collins
Vibraphonist

A native of Plattsburgh, NY, 25 year old percussionist Tim Collins has been involved with music since before he can remember. As a young toddler, he would sit for hours on end listening to records and "watching them go," as he would put it. He would walk around singing melodies and rhythms, and often would get into trouble by banging on pots and pans. This interest did not go unnoticed by his parents, as they signed him up for piano lessons at the ripe old age of 6. Around this same time, the young Timothy also received a toy drum set for Christmas. Since that time, his musical journeys on both piano and drums have been melded together on an instrument that employs the skills of both: the vibraphone. Along the way, he has also achieved a truly remarkable level of versatility on all percussion instruments.

Since 1999, Tim has been concentrating on the vibraphone, earning a Master''s Degree in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. As a vibraphonist, he has worked with such musicians as Steve Slagle, Mike Abene, Dick Oatts, John Benitez, Bobby Sanabria, John Mosca, Ralph Lalama, Dave Lalama, Steve Kirby, Armen Donelian, Miguel Zenon, and Kent Glenn. He is featured on pianist Kent Glenn''s upcoming recording (untitled as of yet). His active performance schedule includes leading his own groups, duo performances with pianist Ayako Shirasaki, as well as weekly performances with the Nathan Childers Trio in Manhattan. He has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC as a member of the 2002 Betty Carter''s "Jazz Ahead" Workshop, and also in Aspen, CO as a member of the 2002 Jazz Aspen Snowmass Emerging Artists program.

As a drum set player, Tim has performed with such musicians as Dick Oatts, Cecil Bridgewater, Steve Brown, John Benitez, Steve Kirby, Brian Lynch, Don Menza, Andy LaVerne, and many rock and jazz freelance groups throughout Central New York and New York City. His recording credits on drums include new recordings by the Rich Willey Quintet ("Gone with the Piggies" CAP 962), Jazz Visions Quartet ("Scenes From A Parallel Universe, Station House Music CD-101), Christian Pop singer Dionne (not released yet), and Chad McGloughlin''s CD "Out On a Limb."
