Details:
The Chad Fisher Group has been turning heads on the Birmingham music scene since its debut in December of 2002. Fisher, an established freelance trombonist, began the group as a straight-ahead jazz project and it quickly evolved into a unique musical experience, combining pure improvisation with original compositions and arrangements. On any given night, the band may be found swinging through a jazz standard, or rolling through a reggae tune with horns sounds reminiscent of Ellington and Mingus and a steel guitar conjuring up classic country. In the same set, they may ride a groove in the spirit of bands like Medeski, Martin, and Wood or Fela Kuti. The only thing one can truly expect at a Chad Fisher Group show is the unexpected.

The twenty-seven year old Fisher has gained quite a reputation, touring often with bands like The Temptations, The Four Tops, The O''Jays, and also with Birmingham''s own American Idol, Ruben Studdard. He has also performed or recorded with artists like Wayne Newton, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, Gerald Levert, Bob Minzter, jazz trumpeter Lew Soloff, saxman Lou Marini, and a long list of others. In addition, his unending need to jam has found him on stage with the likes Wynton Marsalis and personal hero, trombonist Fred Wesley. In the summer of 2004, Fisher found himself playing a record seven performances on five separate stages during Birmingham''s City Stages Weekend. When he''s not traveling, Chad can be found with local and regional favorite, Downright, and of course the CFG.

The CFG''s self-titled debut recording was recorded over the course of two nights in August of 2003. Local art gallery Bare Hands Gallery provided the space. Its large interior with cathedral-like sound proved to be the perfect place to record a "live" jazz record. Eight of the ten originals were written by the leader and two by guitarist Steve Lewis. The tracks - many of them captured in one take - are truly unique and the spontaneity and energy of the band is evident.

"The Chad Fisher Group" features Chad Fisher on trombone, Gary Wheat on saxophones, Steve Lewis on guitars, Tim Carroll on bass, and Michael Glaser on drums.
