FIRST LIGHT

Having been very impressed with their only other studio release, Dream Or Reality (1993), I was anxious to hear what this would sound like. Tea For Two was originally founded way back in 1985 as a duo. In 1987 the classic line-up of vocals, keyboards, guitars, bass and drums was established. After the release of Dream Or Reality the band went on to record Snapshots (1996), a live album with material taken from various concerts between 1993-1996.

So what about 101 then, what does it sound like and above all, is it any good!? Well the music is classic neoprog in the vein of Marillion, Chandelier, Twelfth Night etc. But often a bit heavier like Clepsydra or tougher (later) IQ, without ever sounding too much like any of them. The music has everything a neoprog fan could wish for; intense melodic keyboards combined with soaring crisp guitars and strong catchy vocals. To sum it up Tea For Two has produced yet another strong neoprog album and for fans of that genre this is surely a must have. The best tracks are in my view: Heaven, 101 and Last Piece. Recommended!!

EUROPEAN PROGRESSIVE ROCK REVIEWS:

Tea For Two were founded in 1984 by Michael Schumpelt and Oliver Sörup as a school band of the ''Max Planck Gymnasium Ludwigshafen‘ in Germany. Michael played the piano, flutes and keyboards, Oliver the guitars.
The early music of Tea For Two was a mixture of known rock ballads, blues and folk plus they wrote a fair amount of their own stuff. After Stephan Weber joined the band the style of music changed. Michael and Oliver began to redraw the stories, situations and feelings described in the lyrics and music.

Released in 2001, "101" is the third album from Tea For Two and right from the onset this concept instantly grabs you. They have a huge amount of originality mixed in with other influences such as Galahad/Marillion and with superb piano, violin, orchestral tones and heavy progressive passages interweaving throughout, this album is a sure fire winner.

The album opens with warm washes of synths and percussion then one hell of a guitar takes over with keys and piano. This is a superb example of the music contained on this album. The piano continues on the intro to the following track "Heaven" till Marillion type keys lead into quite complex but at the same time superb melodic swings of mood. Track 3, "Between The Lines", is totally original, thoughtful, melodic and deep, this is pretty special progressive music which has some nice touches of recorders and violin.

The 11:13sec "101" is even better and opens with a magical piano and vocals eventually developing into tremendous symphonic and complex progressive rock sections, this is a classic. Track 5, "Bitter Sweet", is a short orchestral/dramatic piece and leads into "All Too Late" which is quite complex with a killer of a guitar paying a visit. "The Plan" and "Crossing The Edge" are also short pieces, the former being acoustic guitar while the latter is a superb orchestral track. The album ends with "Last Piece" as they return to heavy complex music. This album is without doubt a major piece of work and if you are into melodic progressive music don''t miss this one. 100% and a major album of 2000.
