Originally formed in the summer of 1999 in Boulder, Colorado, for a solo recording project by guitarist Clint Bierman, friends and associates quickly joined on and soon evolved into the somethingtet Sunday Slide, which nearly as quickly evolved into The Grift. After two years playing in and around Boulder, the comings and goings of personnel finally gelled into a regular quintet with Bierman on guitar and vocal, Jeff Vallone on Bass, Ben Lively on violins, Rian Alfiero on keyboards, and Chris Misner on drums and percussion. This lineup released the 16-cut album Sleeping Policeman. Shortly thereafter Alfiero left to concentrate on producing. In 2002, Bierman was then lured back to Middlebury, Vermont, by fellow Middlebury College alumnus Neil Matthews. Vallone, himself another alum, soon followed. With Matthews now on drums, the trio held onto The Grift moniker and released a three-cut The Free Disc to demonstrate the crunch and punch of the trio. Constant touring throughout the northeast, midwest, and back in Boulder honed the chops of the trio. Repeat performances at several gigs over time built a loyal following for the band. This proved to be beneficial as live performances soon took on a new dimension as the crowd soon invited themselves into the performances as particular Grift songs lent themselves to call-and-response or the lyrics were clever enough and the tunes crafted such that at certain points the music begged for audience participation. Summer 2003''s release party for Live 2003 was less than SRO, and the crowd, a large part of which usually dances themselves silly, was wedged in so tight that when somebody breathed on one side of the room, somebody on the other side felt it. October 2003 saw yet another Middlebury College alum, Peter Day, join the band on bass, trumpet and guitar. This gave Vallone the opportunity to indulge his experimental bent with various and sundry sorts of electronic equipment, computers, software and the textures they could produce. Thus Vallone was dubbed the band''s E-boardist. Summer 2004 found the quartet in the studio with producer Gary Mallaber (Steve Miller Band, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen) and Engineer Greg Tobler (Norah Jones, David Bowie) to record Life Beyond Aluminum, an 11-track disc. The band tours constantly and plays over 150 shows a year.
