Details:
100 Mile Stretch is a combination of two talents - vocalist and guitarist Scott Murchison, and vocalist, guitarist and percussionist, J. G. Spencer. As far back as the late 80s, Murchison and Spencer learned the craft of songwriting in an old laundromat turned demo studio, banging out song after song on a beat-up Tascam 8-track reel-to-reel player. When the time came to present their craft to an audience, they formed the Mad Irish Garbagemen and played their collection of original songs to willing listeners throughout the Southeast.

In 1995, the union split, Spencer moving to Atlanta to play and write in such highly acclaimed bands as The Basement Poets, Population and Big Atomic with the “cream-of-the-crop” musicians of the city, Murchison moving to Birmingham to form and write with his band, Murtil, and build a high-end recording studio.

The two kept in touch, and in 2003, Murchison played a country EP he had been working on for the past year, wanting whatever feedback he could get. Spencer recalls being “blown away,” so much so that he wanted to be a part of the action. The two agreed that they would collaborate on a country music project “just like the old days”, both writing and honing many songs either collaboratively or individually.

In 2007, they decided to make it a priority, record the best of their respective catalogs in the best Atlanta studios with the best people around them, and take it as far as they could. The numerous trips back-and-forth between Birmingham and Atlanta, the infamous 170 mile stretch (rounded down to 100 for ease of speaking) gave them their name and their purpose.

Eight months of intense demoing, arranging, rearranging, brainstorming, recording and mixing ensued, until the final product fell upon their ears, which they recall realizing they “had something special,”
They’re anxious for the rest of the world to take a listen.
