Details:
From a town in the midst of solidifying its reputation as an indie music goldmine, Throwback is emerging as a unique export from their native Montreal.

With influences drawn from such diverse genres as roots rock, indie rock, funk and jazz, the five-piece group delivers an original blend to audiences across Ontario, Quebec and the Eastern United States. Fuelled by seamless vocal harmonies, inventive arrangements, and exciting lead instrumental arsenals, Throwback has truly developed their own addictive recipe of acoustic-based funk-rock.

Throwback was formed in early 2002. Singer/songwriter Erik Lind and percussionist Micah Shapiro teamed up with lead guitarist Mike Libis to form the foundation of the current band. In the fall of 2003, as the original trio welcomed bass player Dee to the group, Throwback''s momentum began to accelerate.

Having expanded their sound and their potential, the then-quartet entered the studio in May 2004 with the help of long time friend and producer Nathan Picklyk to work on their first full-length album. Most of the recording took place at a historic converted church located in the heart of downtown Montreal.

The end result - Border Crossing - was released in August 2004, and was supported by a comprehensive fall tour that saw Throwback make its way to the North East, Mid-West and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The album drew accolades along the way - from U.S.-based Relix Magazine, hometown newspaper The Montreal Gazette, and numerous campus publications - and the band has since independently sold over 1500 copies.

As Throwback continues to play to new and welcoming ears in the US and Canada, audiences on both sides of the border are persistently captivated by charismatic songwriting, energy-rich performances, and the endearing level of intimacy the band manages to retain with its crowds.

Backed by an impressive repertoire of original material, Throwback has become a mainstay of the independent circuit, and looks towards the future with optimism. In the band''s most immediate future is a follow-up record. "Border Crossing was recorded just before we hit the road for three months," explains Lind. "Most of those songs took new on new life in our live setting. Plus, the road is a creative place. We came home and realized we have this overflowing inventory of new material that''s just aching to be recorded - not to mention an extra musician [recently-added keyboardist Dave Cohen]."

Thanks to an active touring schedule, an ever-expanding Internet-based buzz, and a tireless D.I.Y. approach, Throwback continues to see its hard work pay off. "We''re playing places now that are hundreds of miles from home, and there are people in the front row singing along to our songs." Lind admits, "It still catches us off guard sometimes... it''s a refreshing feeling to realize there are people paying attention to what we''re doing."

PRESS:

"You just don''t expect acoustic pop of this calibre to come from Montreal."
Jordan Zivitz - Montreal Gazette

"Throwback has a propensity for rich, melodic songs laced with strong hooks and economic but sparkling instrumental work - the buoyant title cut having all the makings of a radio hit."
Mick Skidmore - Relix Magazine

"Throwback''s strongest feature, and undoubtedly the most rehearsed, is their fantastic vocal arrangements. Libis and Shapiro - both [former] members of a capella group Tonal Ecstasy at McGill University - offer comforting backup singing to Lind''s buttery vocals. In unison, the group builds to magical musical moments showcasing their obvious singing abilities. The group''s vocal arrangements are reason enough to go see this band."
Elisha Siegel - McGill Tribune

"If it''s not Lind''s lyrical charm and captivating voice, then it might be the physical presence and magnetism evoked by Libis, immersed in his instrument, or the energetic stage presence of a youthful Shapiro, that will capture your undivided attention and leave you silent until the final note. The initmate connection between the band and their audience retained its intensity from start to finish, captivatiing the show-goers and causing many to leave the venue with the strange feeling of having just lived out a 90 minute quasi-amorous relationship with the musicians."
Annie Mathieu - Universite de Montreal

"This band has some acoustic blue-grassy funk going on, and it''s all good. Three guys and a gal... and they all swap vocal spotlights that highlight their intrinsically-drivern lyrics. Similiar in sound to Jason Mraz, Tommy Anton or Walty, this is the kind of album that catches your ear and doesn''t let go."

"Throwback''s outstanding vocal arrangements outline songs that are instilled with folk, pop, and an occasional splash of hip-hop music. Accompanying their harmonious blend of vocals is a pair of acoustic guitars, a bass, and a djembe (for the most part). All pieces assist in molding an upbeat, feel-good rhythm that''s similar to the likes of Guster, Dispatch and Jack Johnson."
