''HER LITTLE RED WAGON'' BRINGS BACK THE LATE ''70S
By The Denver Post
Capsule reviews of some recent CD releases.

Rock: "Her Little Red Wagon"; The Jonny 3; Self-released.

Straight outta Nashville, it''s the debut album by Denver''s legendary late-''70s new-wave trio. Even if most of the songs are new, this wagon brings the party like it''s 1979. The 11 originals range from raging surf instrumental to flat-out garage stomp ("Until I''m Not"), tongue-in-cheek rock worship worthy of Ben Vaughn ("Wild, Wild, Wild, Wild, Wild!"), a dance-groove goof ("Chili Down, Bop!") and a politically incorrect title track with a monster riff that AC/DC would be proud to call its own. It''s an appropriately DIY affair and clearly a labor of love. Guitarist extraordinaire Kenny Vaughan has become a sought-after session pro since moving to Music City in the ''80s. With original Jonny 3 co-conspirator Leroy "X" Smith ably manning
the drum kit and sharing vocal duties, it''s like the "Littleton Contingent" never left. Smith tells The Post to expect a Denver visit by The Jonny 3 this summer. Fans of a certain age, you''ve been notified. Youngsters, you might learn a thing or two. (Available at Wax Trax in Denver or https://www.tradebit.com.) - R.K. Beegle

Unable to stand it any longer, The Jonny 3 have decided it''s time to get back in the party after 27 years. Here''s what Peter Cooper of the Nashville Scene said about our show:

"Kenny Vaughan''s jaw-dropping guitar is now the centerpiece of his own band, The Jonny 3 delivering post-punk, old-school New Wave. Last week''s Jonny 3 show found guitarist/singer Kenny Vaughan playing amazing guitar and singing infantile, vulgar and highly entertaining lyrics about red wagons and such. Drummer Leroy Smith banged away and delivered his own Jonathan Richman-esque Wild, Wild, Wild, Wild, Wild!, and new bass man Hags Haggerty joined the band without even a whit of rehearsal. It all worked out quite nicely, and we suspect it shall be similarly nifty tonight. . . . "

You can also witness Kenny''s aforementioned jaw-dropping guitar work across the United States with Marty Stuart''s Fabulous Superlatives, and here in Nashville with too many acts to mention at too many venues to list playing too many songs to remember. He is an A list Nashville recording session player and was a highly valued sideman for acts like Rodney Crowell, Patty Loveless, Lucinda Williams, Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Marshall Chapman, and Mindy Smith. He also played on Henry Rollins cut on the tribute to Waylon Jennings album. He played at legendary record producer Sam Phillips funeral and also performed at the star spangled Johnny Cash tribute at the Ryman Auditorium. But don''t think this is like any of them. This is the Jonny 3 and it''s way different.
