Biography

Born Retta Guest in Farmington, Maine, Retta''s first singing performances took place from a child-sized rocking chair in the kitchen of the Guest household. Retta''s first public performance was at age 4 when her sister took her to school for ''show and tell''. The Guest family included Mom and Dad and 8 kids who spent many hours singing around the kitchen table or the piano. But it really all started when brother Ray brought home a guitar and started learning Elvis tunes! As Retta got a little older she and sister Terri and brother Greg learned a collection of folk tunes singing in 3-part harmony with Greg on an acoustic guitar. Greg taught Retta to play acoustic guitar as well, and a trio was born.

Retta began performing music professionally while in college, staying mostly with acoustic pop and modern folk music. At some point along the way she married, hence the name ''Choate''. She has played in local clubs and other area venues. In 2003 Retta released her first CD, Milkglass Flame (available at https://www.tradebit.com). Other past recorded efforts have been an EP released on an independent label, a video recorded in Nashville after winning a talent contest, and a promotional video.

Daddy’s Mill is a tribute to her dad, A.T. Guest, who owned and operated a dowel manufacturing mill in Farmington, Maine. The title song recalls childhood trips to the mill with Daddy and her seven siblings. A.T. Guest died in 1999 and the mill burned in 2002. At that time Retta had the inspiration for Daddy’s Mill.

Daddy’s Mill is Retta''s second full length album released on her own label and includes nine of her originals, plus three covers. Retta was greatly influenced by The Beatles and James Taylor, hence the inclusion of I’ve Just Seen a Face and Sunny Skies. Duncan and Brady will have you dancing around your living room. Her composition Blown Away is a punky tune about becoming a grandmother! October was written and arranged by Retta’s sister, Terri Guest Ayer. It has a dreamy quality and layers of harmony.

Daddy’s Mill has a lively edge and rock/blues tones. Retta was accompanied by Chris Derbyshire on bass guitar, drums, and other instruments. The album is available at https://www.tradebit.com, Broadjam, myspace/https://www.tradebit.com and many digital websites. A CD release party is in the planning and is tentatively scheduled for February, 2009. Retta will be playing in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island in 2009 – watch for the gig schedule.
