Richard Tillinghast has been a full-time kayaker, a hitchhiker on five continents, a potter''s apprentice in Cincinnati, a horse wrangler in Arkansas, a cook, a door to door salesman, a musician. All his life he has been observing, growing, learning, opening up. Last spring, with world affairs darkening and his own personal dam about to burst - when he could hold his songs in no longer - he decided to go into the studio and record. His long lost musical brother Jason Russ suddenly and serendipitously appeared on the scene - their rhythms immediately completed each other and a bond was formed. Jason brought soul and heart to the music. Together they made this album.
Jason is open heart - an earnest young man who throws wide his arms and asks the world to accept him as he accepts the world. He is filled with rhythm - a professional windsurfer who has turned the rhythm of the wind into the beat of his percussion. These two live and met in the spiritually diverse Pacific Northwest. They play their music in a green valley between two snow-capped volcanoes. Kayaking brought Richard to this gorge, windsurfing brought Jason - in their music you can hear the song of the river and the drive of the wind.
As far as their music goes practically - Richard is a modern storyteller with hard rock Appalachian roots. Soulful and rootsy are words used to describe him. He sings and plays a 1924 Gibson tenor banjo (given to him by a philosopher/woodsman friend), slide on a ''69 Silvertone (gift from his father), and a nice Taylor 510. Jason plays all manner of percussion (and at the same time)! Indian Tabla, Cajon (a wooden box drum), and specialized shakers and bells tied to his ankles. He also is a talented singer and didgeridoo player - look for more of these instruments on their next cd.
