Shhh. This part of the story is a secret...but the truth is that it will have been thirty-six years ago this coming fall that i realized that playing the guitar and writing songs was going to be one of the most important things i''d ever do. it was this great girl, diane Smith, that blurted out one afternoon, as we sat in the Speech Annex at mansfield State college, in Mansfield, pennsylvania, that,"Tim can play!" I gathered up my two and a half or three chords and plowed through some Peter, Paul and Mary song. The response turned my head and I was hooked.
I''ve done a lot of music since then that I am not going to talk about. I am going to mention NO STRANGER which is another cd I have for sale here at cd baby. It''s not anything like RED. it''s all instrumental and i did the entire deal at the studio in my apartment. I''m very proud of it and I believe it is definitely worth checking out.
But now the new record is RED. I began to record this at my own studio but then realized that i did not want to be engineer and artist. I got on craig''s list and found a studio that my budget could handle. But the amazing part is not only did I find a great price and quality of recording but i also found someone who got where i was coming from. A rocker like me, who liked the guitars loud and lots of them and, as i found out, as the process evolved, someone who could help produce my songs, someone i could put my trust in. Probably sounds like some bullmake, but I swear, it''s true. His name is George Grant and his studio is called Planet Grey. That''s on east fifth street in the east village of NYC. Man, we had a great time recording these tunes. It took over six months because I could only make it down there, generally, once a week, and I had sixteen songs that I wanted to record.
Except for a few friends I played and performed everything. Rhythm and lead guitars, bass, lead and backing vocals. i even did the percussion. George helped me out playing bass on several tunes and his friend, Frank Morin, added some hot shot leads, where we thought they were needed. Recording digitally was the bomb too because we''d store our mixes as we went along so when we went to do the final mixes it was no big deal. i loved that. time is money, you know.
I chose these songs because for the past two years I''ve had a steady gig at the Electric Banana Bar which is just one block from my apartment. But it''s not the proximity that made the choices but my hard core bunch of fans that come to hear me play there three or four times a month. I mean not only are they loyal they are devoted and make each performance there an experience that I can feel GOOD about.
The reason I have such a terrific gig (you might be wondering) is because the owner of the bar, Lyn Larsen, is probably my biggest fan. i mean even bigger than my girlfriend. and she is bigger than my girlfriend. (don''t worry, her computer is not hooked up to the web) But, really, she has been so amazing in her support of me as an artist. RED and NO STRANGER are both on the jukebox there.
what a gas on a crowded friday or saturday night when one is feeling no pain to go over there and blast out my own music into the crowd. Of course the regulars know what''s going on but the people who don''t know it''s me, I assume, just think it''s some BIG ROCK STAR that they aren''t familiar with...
So. go on. Let yourself get acquainted with RED. I mean there are no guarantees in life but someday you just might find yourself walking into the Electric Banana Bar and knowing exactly what song to play on the jukebox.
