Details:
Throughout the history of folk/rock/pop music there has been a schizophrenia going on about acoustic versus electric music. Bob Dylan in the 60s or Neil Young in the 70s are great examples of mastering both styles and taking them to extremes, as well as shocking their audiences in those times.
On Dutch singer/songwriter Ad Vanderveen’s new double cd Still Now the concept seems to revolve around this same old theme. Although these days there’s nothing shocking about folkies rocking out anymore, it’s still interesting to hear how acoustic and electric music are two distinct and different experiences.
While the contents of the songs are mostly about emotions dealing with love, loss, divorce and starting a new life, the form of Still Now is twofold; one disc is an electric band record, with plenty of guitar improvisation (Still Now -The Garage); the other disc is purely acoustic in the way the songs were born (Still Now -The Living).
Part of the songs appear on both discs in versions that present a completely different feel and way of listening.
In the liner notes of one of Ad Vanderveen’s recent records Dutch music writer Jan Donkers commented: “Among fans there is sometimes the dispute about which one is the best: the ‘rocking Ad’, or the more introspective ‘acoustic Ad’”.
Still Now will no doubt fuel this discussion and with this record each can take their pick, or switch them around to fit whatever mood or situation.
