tobyslater was formerly singer, keyboard player and songwriter of Virgin Records act Catch, which reached the UK Top 20 with their record "Bingo" (later voted one of the best singles of 1997 by respected French music magazine Les Inrockuptibles.)
At the end of 1999, following the demise of Catch and a move to California, Slater started his solo career, playing low-key acoustic gigs in the bars and coffee shops of Los Angeles.
He also started the website https://www.tradebit.com - which now receives up to 3,000 unique visitors a day from countries all over the world and was voted by the public as one of the Top 100 music sites on the entire Web by the users of UK number one music site https://www.tradebit.com. https://www.tradebit.com awarded the site "MP3 Tip of the Week", saying "Slater''s songs are trimmed of fat and thrash elastically. The whole package - site, music, attitude - is a kick."
A strong supporter of Internet music applications, tobyslater was the first UK act to be featured on Napster''s front page as part of their Featured Music Program, alongside international acts such as Kristen Hersh, Sigur Ros and Guided by Voices. The promotion gained a great deal of press coverage and resulted in tens of thousands of downloads of Slater''s song "The Next Life". Taking the lead from pranksters such as Joey Skaggs, Michael Moore and Kalle Lasn, though, tobyslater''s site also includes the satirical page https://www.tradebit.com, a parody of the major-label music subscription services. The site has been covered by all manner of publications such as The New York Post, Wired, the BBC, Reuters and MP3 Newswire.
But the music is by far the most important thing, and tobyslater has been fortunate enough to work with some of the UK''s most exciting producers, including Andy Lovegrove of AwayTEAM (who has produced Supergrass as well as "Once Around The Block" for Mercury Award winning artist Badly Drawn Boy and a whole range of remixes and original material. Solo debut EP "CONSUMPTION", mixed by Mark "Spike" Stent (U2, Bjork, Madonna), also features an MP3 remix by UK Number 2 dance act The Cuban Boys.
tobyslater plays the South by Southwest festival, Austin, Texas on Friday March 15th at Maggie Mae''s, 321 E. Sixth Street, 8pm.
