On the eve of Martin Luther King’s Birthday, and the inauguration of Barack Obama days later, I have completed my second album/CD, Father Is With You. The eleven songs on this project are all inspirational and devoted to love, faith, harmony and hope, with the last track a universal prayer.
This entire project was written and produced in my studio here in Alameda, CA, with various artists including guitarist AdeSoji Odukogbe and backup singer Christina Agbe, both formerly with Fela Kuti. Also featured are Niiarmah Hammond on Congas and Manas Itene on keys. Please see and hear the album to learn more about these and the other fabulous contributors to this work.
The last song is the beginning: Comfort. Somebody asked Jesus, “How do we pray? Teach us how to pray.” Jesus gave them The Lord’s Prayer. Now a universal prayer translated into as many languages as the Bible, I chose Yoruba speaking church elders to praise God alongside the English recital from the Bible. The Lord Jesus is universal.
The Love Of Jah is directed to those responsible for the lives of others: to world leaders and individuals alike. The love of Jah knows no bounds - like the sun that shines on us all and the rain that falls on us all – it shines and rains on all. The message is this: “You must have the love of Jah in your heart, otherwise you cannot lead.” Where there is no love for God, apathy and sorrow reign. Supreme Love is what binds us all.
My song, Everybody Love Jah is to those fighting in the name of God. It is a reminder that we all brothers and sisters and God’s children. Very few people don’t believe in God. We are all one under God. God is love, forgiveness, compassion, tolerance, and peace.
Father Is With You is for those who are hopeful, but also for those in times of struggle, brokenhearted, destitute, hungry, who are lost or full of grief and sadness: Remember the Father is with you to give you strength and hope. Father in this song means the Creator of heaven and earth, the quickening spirit.
Hardly Johnny Know is for those who abuse others based on their authority, who have no love in their hearts for others and abuse humans or animals, for those who are void of love, void of compassion, void of understanding. Hardly do they know that there is love in the hearts of those they abuse or crucify. They go through life not recognizing love and joy. It is really so sad.
Start Within is a seed. Life is everything. Everything starts from inside. We can change the world from the inside out. Think before you do. Love instead of hate. Everything we do is seen by the unseen eyes and all we say is heard by the unseen ears. For us to do everything right, we’ve got to start from within. Even life comes from within.
Who Say Jah No De and the other slang in this song, are West African and West Indies pigeon words of protest against those who say there is no God. I say OOO is in Africa, and he wants us all to love one another and never to lie.
I Know Jah Love is a song about soul redemption. Christy sings the chorus in Yoruba, “Ife’ ni ti oluwa,” which translates into “Love is that of God Almighty.” This is a song about when you experience the joy of life, when you see the work of God through everything: the Sun, the Moon, the seasons, breeze, people, animals, plants, the seas, the mountains, the morning dew. I see and I know Jah Love…what a wonderful experience life is, on all thresholds.
Players is a song about music coming together that I wrote 10-12 years ago, a song about creating an atmosphere of joy and happiness through music, and inspiring the people to dance.
My Constitution is about living a moral constitution of the spirit. In this song I declare my constitution as a living member of the human race. By myself and of myself I am nothing, but as member of the universal human race, I am somebody. We all must adopt this Constitution as a foundation upon which to build a legal moral society.
Only Jah Know (the secrets of life) is for the diviners, the fortune tellers and the soothsayers, the deceivers. To them all I say they know nothing. Only Jah has this wisdom, the universal wisdom. To Jah only do I seek and rely on.
The last song is Comfort, a version of The Lord’s Prayer, which is the beginning.
