Biography of Tsuyoshi Niwa (soprano saxophonist)
Born in Tokyo, Japan. Grew up partially in Mexico City. After coming back to Tokyo at age 15, he started to play the alto saxophone. Four years later, he picked up the soprano sax as well.
After college graduation, Tsuyoshi moved to New York and began studying with mentors like George Garzone (sax), Phil Markowitz (piano), Reggie Workman (bass) and Dave Liebman (sax). He concentrates on the soprano around this time.
In 1997, the first independent album "Sequence X" was produced by Phil Markowitz and himself. The CD instantly gained media''s attention and won commending reviews.
Tsuyoshi left the music college in 1998, but kept on his innovation and performed at NY venues like Knitting Factory and Kavehaz. In 2000, The second independent album was released.
While he remained in New York, he worked full-time as a food analyst for a certain period and as a computer specialist after that. To him, even finantial difficulty is like a seasoning to his art. Eventually, Tsuyoshi began to be known as "Sopranomaster" for his unique composition style and a dedication to soprano saxophone.
In 2004, after eight and half years of study and experience in New York, he decided to leave the the city. He then joined EMI Italy recording artist, Amalia Gre, and toured for four months. In the meantime, he worked on a project to re-issue his second independent album. Three new tracks were added in Rome, and ALFAMUSIC (Italy) officially released the new "Internal Dance".
Tsuyoshi performs mostly in Tokyo now, but plans to go back to the U.S., Italy, Mexico and many more countries.
