Details:
Laura Murphy and Regan Wick first met in 1985 as members of the Washington DC-based traditional Irish band, Celtic Thunder. While their music together in Celtic Thunder has been grounded in an emphasis on traditional Irish styles and ornamentation, much of the material was original and applied their Celtic heritage to other genres. This latest effort is a continuation of that trend. Regan’s compositions and Laura’s vocal ornamentation bring a distinctive and reverent expression to traditional Catholic Marian and liturgical prayers.

Both Laura and Regan come from musical families and draw much of their knowledge and love of music from their fathers, singer Frank Murphy and piano-composer Fred Wick. Thus in this recording, the traditions of Catholic prayer and Irish music are also bound to the tradition of family. The recording itself is graced with the talents of family members. Laura’s sister Cindy Murphy and sister-in-law Marian Murphy arranged and performed the vocal harmonies, and her husband Braxton Baldridge is the author of the cover art, “Madonna and Child.” Regan’s brother-in-law Willie Kelly plays the uilleann (Irish elbow) pipes on “Psalm 23” making it the most explicitly Irish piece on the CD. The instrumentation is rounded out with the talents of long-time musician-friends Dave Abe and Jesse Winch.
