The Maple Blues Revue, originally put together as the house band for the Canadian Maple Blues Award, is an assembly of blues veterans and Maple Blues Award winning musicians from the Canadian blues scene.
Joining the band are Montreal vocalist Dawn Tyler Watson, 2005 and 2007 Female Vocalist of the year and Toronto vocalists John Mays, 2001, 2002 and 2004 Male Vocalist of the Year and Chuck Jackson, 1999 and 2007 Male Vocalist of the Year.
Under the musical direction of Downchild Blues Band’s bassist Gary Kendall, the Maple Blues Revue hosts other Downchild veterans such as Michael Fonfara on piano and organ, Pat Carey on tenor sax as well as vocalist/harmonica player Chuck Jackson.
2007 Juno award winner and multiple Maple Blues Award winners, Fathead, are represented by vocalist John Mays and band leader/sax player/harmonica player Al Lerman.
Blues veterans Chris Murphy, baritone sax, and Chris Whiteley on trumpet round off the powerful horn section.
Guitarist Teddy Leonard (The Johnny Max Band) and Tom Bona (Raoul & The Big Time) on drums join Gary Kendall to complete the rhythm section.
“Performing and recording with The Maple Blues Revue is a very special project for me.” said Kendall. “Not only are all the musicians and singers some of the best in Canada and the world, I can also call them my friends. When surrounded by all this talent, I feel like a vey lucky guy”
The musicians of the Maple Blues Revue have collectively received over thirty Maple Blues Awards as well as countless nominations and other awards.
The Maple Blues Awards have been recognizing achievements in blues music across Canada since 1999. Healey was a recipient of the Maple Blues Life Time Achievement award in 2001.
The show was recorded May 19th, 2008 as part of The Twisted Pines Music and Arts Festival at the Kings Wharf Theater in Penetanguishene, Ontario.
Dedicated to Canadian jazz, blues and rock legend Jeff Healey, 1967 to 2008, sales of the CD will benefit the charity that Healey supported for years, The Daisy’s Eyes Cancer Fund.
Dawn Tyler Watson says, “It is such a rewarding project for me to be involved with. Not only do I get to work with this amazing collection of blues forerunners, I am honored that we have dedicated the recording to Jeff and we get to help a charity that he truly cared for.”
The CD and performance captures Canada’s finest blues vocalist driven by one of the strongest blues bands the country has to offer.
Material provided by the artists in support of the charity is a blend of power jump blues and funk with straight up blues and a tint of Gospel.
