Midwest Hype recorded their third album, Colorful Love and are adding the BSides from the same sessions. The album was crafted by nationally-acclaimed Doug McBride at the venerable Chicago institution Gravity Studios. The band has been riding a series of wins, having been named “Best Band About to Make it Big” by Shore magazine in November 07, and is featured in a Sundance Film Festival short.
Midwest Hype is a tight, road-hardened, funk-driven, ska-reggae-jazz ensemble that weaves hip-hop and 60s through 90s pop into a contemporary and danceable original groove. Their fan base cuts across decades and race, and their party-on-the-beach vibe is both accessible and musically expert.
As a seven-piece band, Midwest Hype delivers a full, multi-layered, and cohesive musical experience, featuring punchy horns inspired by James Brown and Maceo Parker, funk-soaked bass lines, and polyrhythmic drumming and percussion. Soulful lead vocals bounce off a foundation of upbeat rhythm guitars, and grooving-funk lead guitar riffs. Think of the Hype as a child fathered by Earth, Wind, and Fire, Dr. Dre, and Sublime.
The core of Midwest Hype came together as high school students in Laporte, Indiana and has been together for more than seven years. Most were music majors at Ball State University, where the band expanded their musical influences and demonstrated their commitment to musical exploration and musicianship, adding members and gigging constantly. Several members of The Hype have toured Europe with various Jazz bands.
