Details:
Blind Staggers Music was created and first used to record an all acoustic album (also available here at CD Baby) for a group called Dixie Remedy Company. The Blind Staggers Anthology represents more original music recorded by local South Georgia musicians in an atmosphere in which they could freely express themselves and their music with no commercial pressure concerns. Most of the demos here were recorded in one take to preserve spontaneity, which has kind of become a formula here at Blind Staggers Music. Sure there are a few out of tune notes here and there, but the feel of the music recorded while it was fresh and new to the performers cannot be duplicated with repeated takes and corrections.
If you looked into the recording room you would see the instruments used to make the majority of the recordings: a Gibson Les Paul Standard, a Paul Reed Smith Standard 24, a Fender Telecaster, a 1936 Gibson EH-100 lap steel, a 1976 Music Man Stingray Bass, a drum machine and a Yamaha Maple Custom Jazz kit with no toms (just bass, snare and cymbals). These were all swapped back and forth by the musicians in the recordings.
Essentially four bands are represented in this first Anthology. The first selections (tracks 1-5) are from Blue Mourning, which to me seems like a cross between Neil Young and Pink Floyd. In fact, the first song is a tribute to Neil Young. Extended solos and cool electric slide guitar with understated vocals reside here. They even cover a version of one of the other band’s songs (an slow acoustic version of The T-Boppers rocking Hey Hey Girl).
The next Band, called The T-Boppers, consists of 6 songs (tracks 5-10) written by the band’s guitar player for his four year old daughter. I would call it heavy power pop for kids. Kids love the Darkside (about Darth Vader)and Creature in the Closet.
Crooked Sky (tracks 11-14) is the strange hodge-podge third band here that performs a wide variety of country, blues, and acoustic music. Old ‘25 is a great acoustic number written about the guitarist’s old 1925 Gibson acoustic archtop guitar. They have no style in particular, just whatever strikes their fancy.
The last band on the Anthology is Furthermore (tracks 15-18). This three lead guitar band cut 19 instrumental demo tracks here of which three are included on this CD. They are a funk-rock instrumental band.
A common element in many of the tracks is the wild electric slide lap steel guitar played on an old Gibson lap steel which is in fact one of the first production electric guitars in history.
In truth, none of these songs should even exist. Friends, kids, and others acted as cheerleaders or these recordings would never have been made, or even seriously considered. The bands here will probably never exist in the real world and surely couldn’t survive here in South Georgia, but all had great fun in bringing to life some original music in a fun, relaxed, free atmosphere. Some interesting things happen by chance! Now these tunes will be thrown (through CD Baby) into the ether of the Internet so that others may possibly enjoy them.
Thanks Imrie, Victoria, Jason, Randy, Will, Scott and to all who participated!
