CD ReviewUncle Saltys Cabin "Uncle Saltys Cabin 2"
by Robert Murphy

When this CD landed in my mailbox, my first reaction was "here''s a band in need of a serious name change"! Popping the CD into my CD player however was a pleasant surprise when the first song cranked out with some cool funky guitar and great sound. A lot of the guitar work reminds me of a mixture of the rock group ''Extreme'' and ''James Gang'' when they were in their Funk 48/49 groove and an overall ''Black Crows'' meets ''Extreme'' band sound. The 11 tracks contain ten songs with a short guitar intro on one track. "Good Lovin" starts off with the previously mentioned funky riff with some rockin guitar, keyboards and funk groove. "What Do You Want" has that ''James Gang'' Funk 48/49 type of feel to it. Again more of a rock song that blues. "I Ain''t Drunk" is a kind of a blues shuffle but sounds more rock than blues. "Hesitate" has a southern rock feel to it sounding like something that the ''Black Crows'' might put together. "Fancy Woman" starts out with another of those funky riffs on the guitar along with plenty of keyboard to support the vocals. "This Song" is an acoustic based number with mostly guitar and mandolin and is the most laid back song on the CD. Vocally "This Song" reminds me of the "Crash Test Dummies''. Most of the music is in the rock/funk/blues groove which these guys have got down pretty darn good. the musicianship is good, the band is tight and if their live show is anything like the CD, they should put on a killer show. I''ve played this CD for quite a few friends of mine and they all liked it. I like it too!!! Bottom Line: It''s a excellent CD, with a first class mix, excellent production, with good songs and musicianship. If you like your music a little on the funky side with a good dose of rock guitar, check this CD out. Samples of the music can be found on https://www.tradebit.com and you can order the CD there also. https://www.tradebit.com Artist Mp3 of the week is Uncle Salty''s Cabin! Uncle Salty''s Cabin initially started out as a side project for producer/engineer Darin Di Pietro. Hooking up with singer Brett Branham, they released a CD of Darin''s original songs they did just for fun. A copy wound up at a local college radio station and became an instant hit. The station dedicated a weekend to Uncle Salty''s Cabin and they went on to be the number one requested band for months.

Cover letter:

UNCLE SALTY''S CABIN is back with another release that''s worthy of the “Best new music in the last 15 years” type praise that their debut CD received last year.

With the release of their second CD, “UNCLE SALTY''S CABIN 2,"the band proves once again that not all music out of the Pacific Northwest has to be noise. Distancing themselves from the crowd by writing great songs and not following the latest fads, the band is allowed to go in any musical direction they wish. On “UNLCE SALTY''S CABIN 2,"they go from Texas-style blues (GOOD LOVIN'') to Pop Rock (HESITATE) and even a touch of Folk (THIS SONG) without thinking twice.

You can either share the bands “life is good” attitude or you can wallow in the negative, self-pity of so many other bands. UNLCE SALTY''S CABIN will have a good ol'' time with or without you.

MEET THE BAND:

Brett Branham – Vocals. Brett loves attention and Brett loves women, and judging from the shows over the past year, he isn''t lacking for either of them. He believes he is the center of the known Universe, and why shouldn''t he, after all he is a singer. He''s got the voice and the swagger and he''s not about to apologize for it.

Darin Di Pietro – Guitar. Nobody can out-talk Darin. Therefore, Darin always gets his way. He could care less about what other people think about his music. He knows he''s always right, and will be the first to tell you he is. Uncle Salty''s Cabin is a direct extension of his personality and he is more than happy to sit in his studio and write great songs all day long.

Chris Ray – Bass. A beer, a smoke, a bass, and a little B-ball on the tube. That''s what Chris Ray is all about. Toss on a CD from Tower of Power, order a pie and he''s in heaven. He''s got the groove and he''s got the chops, he even has a view of the train tracks from his front window.

Dick Henderson – B3/Keys. Dick is the oldest member of Uncle Salty''s Cabin, and with that distinction comes a lot of ridicule from the band. But the bottom line is the young punks today don''t even know what a B-3 looks like, much-less can play one. Without a B3 there just ain''t no Uncle Salty''s Cabin. You can listen to the Backstreet Boys and get a lesson in stupidity or you can listen to Dick and get a lesson in talent you won''t soon forget.

Jeff Derby – Drums. Jeff was born to be a drummer. He really doesn''t want to do anything else. His track record of quitting jobs is proof enough. Technically proficient, he also has the feel for the music that can only come from deep inside. He played on three songs for the first CD, toured with the band, then played on four songs for the latest CD. Once he can find a new girlfriend in Seattle to support him again, he''ll move back and do at least five songs on the next CD and tour with the band.

Scott Vogel – Drums. Scott is an incredibly talented drummer. He''s got chops most drummer can only fantasize about. He moved back to Seattle between girlfriends, (while Jeff moved back to Indiana between girlfriends) and finished up the last of the 1999 Uncle Salty''s Cabin shows. He then played on the final four songs for the latest CD and will switch off with Jeff, between girlfriends, on the forthcoming summer CD release and summer of 2000 shows.
