Details:
Joltwagon is rollicking sonic grit and melody. From Asheville, North Carolina, the band is forging its own blend of rock with intriguing songwriting, soaring guitar work, and clawhammer banjo. While captivating with its pop sensibility and harmonies, the group moves effortlessly from freewheeling rock to alt-country to gypsy/klezmer instrumentals. As listeners are swept along in an eclectic mosaic of sound, they might imagine Neil Young & Crazy Horse meets John Hartford with a Wilco aesthetic on the side.
"Whyanosis" is the freewheeling follow-up to their 2007 eponymous debut. The core songwriting pair of David Bradshaw and Dalton Stansbury returns for this sometimes reflective, and other times, raucous affair. The album includes 11 tracks, 10 of which were written by either Bradshaw or Stansbury—the other cut was written by New York City songwriter and banjoist Sean Condron.
For this disc, the band aimed for a more direct and spontaneous sound, recording all of the basic tracks live. The songs are still the focus, although the band isn’t afraid to experiment with various instrumentation and other “found sounds” (listen for cicadas, lighters, hummingbirds, etc.)
Overall, this recording reveals a more straightforward rock approach. Despite the band’s eclectic influences and style, they were able to forge a distinctive and cohesive work.
