The story that is The Velvet Janes begins in Nov 94, two thousand miles from home, surrounded by thousands of people. It''s cold, it''s wet and it''s really really crowded. There''s no hot water and a group of visiting artists have been assigned the last remaining beds, (in the entire universe it seemed). what no one told them though is that the beds were in an old shearing shed and no one had been in there to check if the beds actually still existed.
Meanwhile...on the other side of what is fast becoming a lake, another group of musicians from yet another side of the country are hastily trying to retrieve what is left of their possessions as they float away, along with the tent they were once protected by.
Thrown together by this unusual and definitely memorable set of circumstances, are Rose Farrow and Martine Locke.
And so, began the journey of two friends who moved across the country, divorced a husband, left secure (i.e. really well paid) jobs and made a commitment to write the best damn songs they could, play the way they wanted, sing passionately about everything from dogs to death and each time give 100% to their audiences and take them on a journey that is as unique as each audience is.
Rose Farrow was born in Perth, Western Australia and from the age of 8, knew she wanted to be a singer. Standing in front of the ladies auxiliary at the orphanage where she grew up, singing ''my favorite things'' (complete with hand actions), was the start of a lifetime dream that carried her through her time in the orphanage, in numerous foster homes and into adulthood, where finally Rose was in control of Rose''s decisions.
Martine Locke dreamt of having a top ten album, an international profile and enough money to buy her mum a house - all before her 17th birthday. But it took her the first 20 years of her life to find the courage for her dream and to get out of her bedroom. Born unexpectantly in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Martine has done ''it'' differently ever since. Never content with ''recreating the wheel'', she searched to find her sound & her own unique playing style.
Now, 550 shows, eight national Australian tours, four albums, two that came out No.1 on the West Australian independent charts, No 3. nationally on the Australian Independent charts, five top ten places two years running in the Australian National Songwriting Competition, national tours with international artists such as Ani Di Franco (her last two Australian tours), Arlo Guthrie and the Cowboy Junkies, airplay across Australia and from Dublin to Mexico, on major commercial stations and independent alike ...and the dreams of youth are in motion.
In four years, The Velvet Janes have released four albums on their own label ‘Passionfruit Produce'', all self funded and independently released. Songs that chronicle some of that journey. Songs that you will sing along to. Songs that will remind you of your own experience. A snapshot of two musicians whose melodic skill and emotional honesty combine effortlessly to suffuse a collection of songs that are at once confident and mature, and exquisitely direct.
The Velvet Janes debut album ''Venus Calling'' was released on July 4th 1998 and came out No.1 on the Western Australian Independent Charts and No.6 on the Australian Independent Record Charts. As with all Velvet Janes albums, it was a self funded, self produced, self distributed collection of 13 songs that chronicle some of that journey. Songs that you will sing along to, songs that will remind you of your own experience. A snapshot of two musicians whose melodic skill and emotional honesty combine effortlessly to suffuse a collection of songs that are at once confident and mature, and exquisitely direct.
The Velvet Janes next album - ''Opus No.3'' - is by far the best studio work produced by the Velvet Janes to date. 12 tracks that delve deeper into the lives of two performers from very different backgrounds. Personal journal entries delivered in song that make the world seem a smaller place and our lives so similar. ''Opus No.3'' came out at No.1 on the Western Australian charts and has to date received commercial airplay nationally and internationally. ''Opus No.3'' is also being released for the first time internationally with CD Baby & Femail Creations.
The year 2000 has opened up new and exciting opportunities for the Janes. Firstly with the release of their new live album ''Live at the Velvet Lounge'' which was recorded over two nights to their home crowd in Perth, Western Australia. And then once more being asked to tour nation wide with Ani DiFranco provided the Velvet Janes the opportunity to be exposed to a wider and more diverse audience than ever. The Velvet Janes are independent, focused and passionate about what they do. With a heartfelt integrity that has to date seen them shy away from record company offers for the sake of their independence and sanity. All of which has seen them become a word of mouth ''explosion'', not only in their own State where they have grown a solid loyal audience , but also around Australia as their constant touring schedule over the past 12 months have taken them into the homes of thousands of Australians. Their two self funded tours to the USA, which has been promoted primarily through the internet, is also surely growing their audience across the USA in what can be seen as only the beginning of their career.
