The Village Jammers started about 1984, when time, place, and music came together for some guys in Stonington, Connecticut. Dan Ravennelle knocked on Geoff Corkhill''s door after his wife threw him out. Dan and Geoff had been in a rock band together, and they got completely caught up in the music of Doc Watson, Tony Rice, The Delmore Brothers, The Dillards, Norman Blake, and Clarence White, to name a few. Dan and Geoff had old Martin guitars and went to play their first gig in the subway. They made enough money for one beer.
They soon added Michael Palazzolo, another rocker friend on bass guitar, and Rene Brisson, the magical harmonica player. The group eventually got a real job at the Village Pub in Stonington, CT. They were on their way, but needed a name and enough music for the whole night. "Call Jay, Geno, Vince, Steve, Tommy, and Jim, and see if they can play a few songs." The Village Pub gigs became very popular. Everybody would show up, play a few, and have a blast. The band was infectious with its own brand of ridiculous humor, costumes, and special guests. In 1986, Geoff bought a mandolin, and gave it to one of the guest players, with the stipulation that he join the band and learn to play it (in that order). Curtiss Thompson became the mando player, Jimmy Carpenter was added on drums, and the Village Jammers have been playing ever since.
The Village Jammers are some guys who play music. The music is sometimes hard to describe; it''s some kind of American mixed breed. It has banjo, dobro, mandolin, and flatpicking, but it''s not bluegrass. It has blues, but it''s not the blues. It has heartache, trains, rivers, and pain, but it''s not country. It doesn''t have Marshall stacks or pyrotechnics, but it does rock! The way Dan, Geoff, Mike, Curt, and Jim bring it on, the music cuts a new road. The Village Jammers will keep going down that road. Check out their new CD "Til It Happens To You," and take a ride down that road with them.
