Into The Tracks of The Wabanaki People

Between tradition and modernity, more than a new musical band, Wabanag is a conceptual framework that was created in the end of the 90s by Yovan Nagwetch (Little Sun), a Canadian Metis of Wabanaki ancestry.

The Wabanaki, known as the "People of the Dawn", are a hoop of Algonquin nations that live on the East Coast of Canada and the USA. It includes the Abenaki, Maliseet, Penobscot, Passamaquody and the Micmac.

The Métis are the "forgotten" people of Canada. Of mixed-blood ancestry they were the bridge between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people during the pre-Confederation period. Most of them prefered the "savage" way of life than the rules of the Crown or the Church. After pacification of the "Indian" territories, they started themselves to be deprived of their rights and identity. Recognition of the Metis is still a hot issue in Canada today. In Quebec, most of the french speaking population is descendent of the " Canadians" - a Métis people of the St Lawrence Valley.

Yovan Nagwetch is born in Quebec. His family emigrated to Europe in the end of the 60s. While still a teenager he got interested by music and started soon to write his own songs. He took part in several musical projects before moving to Scandinavia in the end of the 80s. There, he found a supporting environment for his own music that he sees as a bridge between peoples and cultures.

For the album ULODI, Yovan has composed and arranged the music and lyrics. He plays the flutes, percussion, acoustic guitar and sings in native language. The line-up is composed by Juka Jokiranta (Finland) on guitars and back vocals, Daithi O''Clearigh (Ireland) on drums and percussion, and Ivo Baric (Yugoslavia) on bass. It includes some special guests like Esu Holopainen, Miro Mantere and Kim Nyblin (Finland). The result is a spiritual journey to the Wabanaki and Métis Country.

Like Yovan, the music is "métisse". Ancient sounds produced by stones, wooden sticks, seeds, the frame drums and musical bows, that constitute the essence of the music together with the singing in traditional language, mix with sonorities and rhythms that belong to the rock or blues tradition.

The experts will find some similarities with the new Samì music of Mari Boine or Ulla Pirttijarvi.

Wabanag are part of the FACES family the only multicultural festival of Finland where the band has been playing every year since 1999.
