"Refreshing" is the word most often used to describe the music of Nori & Barbie Kelley. Known as "WIND," Nori & Barbie presently live in the south Yokohama area. Being songwiters as well as musicians, they have a wealth of original material between them. Their concerts showcase both their songwriting and musical abilities, with Barbie singing, playing flute, percussion & acoustic guitar, and Nori singing and playing electric and acoustic guitars & lap steel. Married since 1993, Nori and Barbie also owned and operated a recording studio for 12 years in Alabama.
Born in Japan, but living in Alabama since age 9, Nori has been a recording session musician since 1979. He has recorded or performed with such noteable artists as Jon Anderson (Yes), Dave Hope (Kansas), the Chi-Lites & Michael English. CCM magazine once compared his guitar playing to both Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits and Phil Keaggy. In 2003 Mel Bay Publications released a new book & CD written by Nori called Basic Guitar Strumming & Fingerpicking, his second project with them released internationally. Barbie hails from the Wilmington, Delaware area and has been playing flute since age 9, and more recently, the guitar. She has played the flute & sung backing vocals on many recording sessions. Her voice has a pleasant, almost Celtic-like quality, and has been compared by some to Natalie Merchant. Audiences love her flute playing, and their combination of flute and guitar has achieved some nice results.
WIND''s style of music is a mixture of rock and folk, drawing from British artists like Al Stewart, Yes, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, etc., as well as North American artists like Bruce Cockburn, Kansas, The Allman Bros. & 10,000 Maniacs.
This recording, Small Town - Big God (2003), was a joint Christian worship project done with Vineyard worship leader Larry Lloyd. The first six tracks are by WIND, while the remaining six tracks are by Larry.
Nori has also produced and engineered four albums in Japan since 1999. Nori & Barbie have also travelled to Russia three times, where they played a number of concerts and produced an album by a Russian group as well.
WIND have been based in Japan since October 1993, but will be moving back to the U.S. in June 2005.
