Karuna is a Seattle based indie rock band and the musical outlet for songwriters Sean Paulich and Rob Miura. The band was formed in 2001 by Sean Paulich and his brother Michael Paulich. The band name is the Sanskrit word for compassion. The original lineup of Karuna included Michael Paulich (lead vocals, guitar), Sean Paulich (piano), Rob Miura (bass) and Chris Croft (drums; currently with Seattle band “At The Spine”). Karuna toured extensively throughout the Northwest region from 2001-2005 and developed a strong, devoted fan base. Tragically, the band was forced to stop the music due to the sudden death of its lead singer Michael Paulich on June 6, 2005.
After stepping away from the music scene for nearly a year, Sean Paulich and Rob Miura began writing the music for Karuna’s first full length album. Sean Paulich stepped into what had been his brother’s role as lead vocalist, while Rob Miura took over the duties of lead guitar. Joined by percussionist Josh Will and bassist Alden Verdan in 2007, the restructured band began playing Seattle’s live music circuit again.
At the beginning of 2009, Karuna finished its album, titled ''''“The Eternal Fire”''''. The album draws from the songwriters’ experiences and reflects upon themes of loss, hope, and acceptance of life as it is. Despite the changes the band has endured since its inception, Sean Paulich and Rob Miura have kept the musical core and vision of Karuna intact. This is evident in the album ''''“The Eternal Fire”,'''' as Karuna’s signature melodic piano based rock resonates throughout each track.
