Short Bio:
Arvins Garden is a Tempe based five-piece alt-metal ensemble that has been steamrolling their way through the local and semi national music scene since 2001. Coming from severely different musical backgrounds, their personal influences range from 70’s punk and 90’s alternative to modern nu-metal and hip-hop however the members of A.G. come together to deliver a seamless continuity. Wanting to be more than just another band writing music, A.G. realizes the importance of not only capturing the attention of their fans, but holding on to it. Arvins Garden devotes a large percentage of their time to developing their live show. Each member contributes to the intense caliber of showmanship at every performance. Dustyn has aggressive sweating vocals and relatable lyrics combined with an amazing ability to control an audience. Jay’s unique bass playing and theatric performance style rip through any stereotype one might have of bass players. Ryan’s driving yet solid drums keep this volatile train on its tracks. His well-tempered demeanor can be deceiving. D.J. 35 adds A.G.’s aggressive and haunting samples with perfect placement, creating a soundtrack within the music. Adam delivers a perfect combination of pocket rhythms and sweeping melodies combined with well-planned and well-placed solos. His confident swagger lends to a perfect balance for the bands aggressive front line. To describe Arvins Garden’s live show would be something like getting hit in the face with a bat and wondering why it felt so good. At this juncture Arvins Garden is a major label act stuck in a local band’s body. A.G. will be making a lot of noise this year so open your ears and get ready for the new blend coming out strong in 09’.
The Full Story of Arvins Garden:
Arvins Garden was founded in 2001 with Mike Welsh (lead guitar, samples), Dustyn Marsing (vocals), and Mike McMurry (vocals). Soon after, adding Rob Hamilton (Drums), the band began developing its sound with a sample and groove nu-metal style. Jay Stocks (bass) was then brought in to fill in the low end. With the line up complete, it would take just a few short months for the band to record their first album, "The Virgin E.P."
Arvins Garden, now armed with a CD, an arsenal of talent, and unbridled enthusiasm began playing live and promoting relentlessly. With unprecedented speed, they became a headlining act at numerous venues around the valley. A.G.’s fan base began to grow due to their collective energy and aggressive live performances. After a year of playing every venue available locally, they decided to take the show on the road, literally, playing venues in Las Vegas and Albuquerque where they received a very positive reception. Although it was a dream team line up at this time, Arvins Garden said goodbye to one of its founding members and long time friend Mike Welsh, who decided to pursue solo projects with the full support of the band.
At this time having some big shoes to fill, Arvins Garden found guitarist Dan Ingles, who quickly adapted to the existing material and effortlessly developed new concepts that would capture the aggression A.G. already had, but also added his melodic yet growling touch. His experience and God-given talent made the transition appear seamless. Continuing on with a successful template, the guys found themselves back on top of the scene in no time. Arvins Garden released its second album the self-titled EP that they now refer to as, the “Blue Album.” Now showcasing the different styles and genres of each member, this sound quickly recaptured the attention of their audience, while gaining new fans in the process. With show attendance growing rapidly, the band was asked to headline the Marquis Theatre (a 700 plus venue in Tempe, AZ) as well as, share the stage with national acts such as, Depswa and Adema.
Amidst a lot of chaos and success coming from rehearsing and touring, co-front man Mike McMurry made the controversial decision to part ways with his A.G. brothers to meet family obligations. The guys raised their glasses to their boy and supported this heart-breaking, but necessary decision. The band continued with one vocalist, a tricky transition but welcomed challenge for Dustyn who quickly found his new roll as an aggressive and entertaining front man. Although it took some getting used to, A.G. quickly regrouped and thrived.
Around the end of 2004, after trying to rekindle the spark that Arvins Garden had for so long, things didn’t feel quite the same. As so often happens in music, the band began questioning the direction of the project, Dustyn, Rob, Jay, and Dan decided collectively to explore their options and see where they wanted to go musically. In early 2005, the guys parted ways with Rob and Dan who would join long time Arvins Garden friends Big Mike and Brando to form Prime8Picnic. Dustyn and Jay continued on together and rebuilt Arvins Garden.
Bringing us to mid-2005, Dustyn and Jay reunited with Mike Welsh to create new material that would define Arvins Gardens’ sound moving forward. At the end of 2005, the band enlisted Flagstaff transplant, Ryan O’Hara on drums to fill in the rhythm section. In 2006, after quickly writing, rehearsing, and starting to play live again A.G. realized the importance of adding samples, a vital part of the projects sound. After a painstaking search they realized the answer was right in front of them, so in mid-2006 A.G. would add Josh Marsing (known as D.J. Three-Five) as their new D.J. and sample man. Josh jumped right in to play bookings in Albuquerque, Farmington, and Flagstaff. The success of the tour cemented D.J. THREE-5’s place as a permanent member of A.G.
In late 2007, Mike Welsh once again elected to part ways with the band to pursue other avenues in music. As one of the co-creators of the project and due to a long history with A.G., Mike continues to play a supportive roll and parted ways with the best wishes from both sides. In late 2007/early 2008, after a short stint trying to find the missing link to complete the project A.G., in a twist of fate found their newest member and guitar player, Adam Peterson. This young and energetic phoenix native quickly owned the music and would fit right in with the crazy bunch he now knows as the A.G. family.
Arvins Garden has had the chance to share their life and stage with some amazing musicians and more importantly friends. Arvins Garden would like to thank everybody who has played a part in making A.G. what it is today, in particular Mike Welsh, Rob Hamilton, Dan Ingles, and Mike McMurry. Homies who will always be considered A.G. family
Now with a completed line up of talented and aggressive musicians, Arvins Garden is now writing new material for the long awaited third release "IN OUR BLOOD", which should be available spring 2010.
Arvins Garden is started touring again and 2008 is looking bright for the guys. A.G. will be making the biggest push of their careers for major management and a record deal.
